Drum velocity mapping - and other quirks

Drum velocity mapping - and other quirks

2012-02-14 by Ricard

I've got a Protean Drums ROM in my XL-7 (it's the one that comes with the PX-7). I've been trying to figure out the velocity mapping works, i.e. when you play different velocities, different drum samples (played at different volumes) come in, like 2, 3 or 4 different samples per key.

I've been trying to figure out if its an integral part of the sample, or it can be controlled in some way. I can't see anything in the patch cords routing velocity to some sort of sample selection. And it's not done with multiple layers either.

What I really want to do is disable the function as some of the samples are rather different between different velocities. Yes, I could do that by changing the velocity curve on the pads but I want to do it in a patch instead so I don't need to change velocity curves for different patches.

Another odd thing I've found with this particular ROM is a patch called Juno Bass or something like that. It's made up of a couple of samples, one of which doesn't output any sound on G# in one of the octaves. Again, it doesn't look to be any key mapping that's set up (all layers respond to the whole key range), it's just silent on that particular note. And the pad works, it works for the other layers for instance. Really odd.

I haven't played with this kind of thing and I don't have the Protean Drums ROM. That being said, I am wondering if you can use the velocity fade settings so that only the velocities triggering the samples you want will sound. In OS2.0 its the 4th menu item:

L1 VEL:LO FADE HIGH FADE

Hope this helps.
