Power Supply for Command Station

Power Supply for Command Station

2011-06-15 by lz303

Hi,

my XL7 just broke down. No power anymore.

Checked the power supply and only the green and the purple cable have 9V and 2.95V. The rest is dead.

Does anyone know where i can get a new one or otherwise a similar power supply?

Thanks

Epr electronics. Or can you use a pc power supply?

EPR says _ Out of stock

A pc power supply? If that works i also take a pc power supply but i have to say that i am not an electrician :)

I can measure and do little repairs if i have a detailed manual :)

I know that a PC power supply has +12V and 4V?

Can you explain to me what i have to do?

Thanks...

Just checked a ATX power supply...

OK enough cables for the XL7 but what about the right specs ?

Which power supply should it be?

An ATX power supply has 3.3V 5 V and 12V but what about the 10V (or 9V) and 2.75V of green and purple cable?

Need some kind of manual :)

A PC power supply requires forced air cooling, a fan to blow air over the heat sinks. There is no outside air inlet on a CS.

I posted this before

After frying a cs pwr sup, as they do run very HOT
I put a comp fan with holes on the base of my cs

Runs way coooler

...but as i said before i am not an electrician i need detailed instructions...

I checked Powdec but no similar power supply there...

So there is not one similar power supply on the market right now? Hmmm...

If there is no similar one available i would go for the PC PSU just to try if the XL7 works again .

5V 12V -12V and 3.3V are no prob but what about the 2.75V or the 10V?

in an audiofanzine forum in 2004 someone said CMG9-01 is the same thing as PTE43-XX-C. i just emailed powdec about them and will report back. maybe someone can review the pdf and determine which variation is suitable for command station?

Re: [xl7] Re: Power Supply for Command Station

2011-06-17 by Scott Solmonson

I'm chiming in a bit late here, and while I'm not recommending this as some sort of tested setup, my knowledge of DC power driving digital circuitry tells me that (barring any really weird stuff going on) the PC PSU's 3.3V output will drive the 2.75V circuit just fine, and the 12V output will similarly drive the 10V circuit just fine.
I would add a hole and a fan as others have said- generally the only consequence of overdriving the voltage a little like that is increased heat.

But if one removes the side panels, there are four square holes that
can be used for it. Not sure how does it look when rack ears are in
use though.

Re: Power Supply for Command Station

Besides the cooling issue (and the noise of the fan!), don't forget that a PC power supply is normally controlled from the motherboard. That has as a side-effect that you can't simply hook up an ATX power supply: it won't provide power until it "senses" the motherboard. In short: you'll have to modify it. Search for it online, and heed any warnings and safety precautions!

Here are the PSU specs, from this very list :
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/xl7/message/18048

Some people adapted ATX PSU to their failing Command Station.

Untrue- an ATX-standard power supply has a "soft" switch- it's the
green wire that is the fourth over that needs to be shorted to ground
(black) to turn it on- a paper clip or simple wire works fine :)

Thanks a lot for all posts so far :)

I will think about it.

As i am not 100% sure that the PSU is damaged (as I said before I am not so familiar with electronics just measured the Volts and recognized that there are 0V except the 2 voltages of 2.75V and 10V) I guess i am going to buy a 2nd CS and try the PSU in my damaged CS.

If that works I will go for a PC PSU.

Will inform you about it...

Re: Power Supply for Command Station

Ok. My XL7 works again. Now with an ATX PC PSU (20Pin).
Sure it is not a nice solution because the PC PSU is big and heavy and is outside the case of the CS but until i have found another solution it is ok. I am very glad to see that it is only the PSU which is damaged and not the mainboard of the CS.

Seems to me that the Powdec PSU is not the best? All my other gear is older than the CS and it all works like a charm:)

So if anyone knows a PSU which fits in the CS please tell me...

Thanks...

that is great! can you tell the make of the psu and also any installation instructions? didn't someone say you have to bridge two wires in the cable? i could then make a faq in the files section. my psu is also on the way out so i need to do this myself.

cheers

Re: Power Supply for Command Station

2011-06-21 by lz303

Well it is quite easy.

Take e.g. an ATX 20pin or 24pin PC PSU. I used a PSU from my old Desktop PC.

Here are the pinouts of a ATX 20pin PSU:

http://pinouts.ru/Power/atxpower_pinout.shtml

Then I cut the needed cables coming from the PC PSU. We need three 3.3V cables (orange or red cable) two 5V cables a +12V and a -12V cable. Also we need another 10V cable but for that I just used the +12V too. At last two ground cables (black).

The PSU needs to be bridged with the green and the black cable to powerup. Just solder a black(ground) and the green cable both coming from the PSU together. Then the PSU always powers on when the switch is turned on.

I used the cable from the Powdec PSU. I disconnected the cables from the 'plug' and soldered the cables from the ATX PSU to the cables of the powdec plug. Most colours match.

I guess there is a nicer and maybe 'better' solution but for me it was important to test if the Command Station is working or if the mainboard is damaged. This test showed me that the CS itself is ok and i can use the XL7 until I found a better solution. Best would be a PSU which fits inside the CS case.

Could make photos and send them...
