pattern defaults

pattern defaults

2011-06-04 by lutherblisset63

Hi,

Finally upgraded to os 2.0, which to turned out to be an issue with the cable drivers. New cable with drivers built and it worked without trouble.

I have one question for now. I'm mainly driving external synths with the xl-7 and one thing that takes time is having to set the midi to external and set the instrument to the default (nothing) on each new track.

Is it possible to set a default for the patterns to cover this? I figured I would make a template pattern and copy it as required. This is still not very efficient. Any ideas?

I notice there is software for editing the xl-7 - prodatum. Maybe I can load all the patterns with the template, then I'd be set.

AFAIK, Prodatum only takes care of the XL7 sounds.

However, I think you can create the "null" pattern, then use E-Loader
to save it to file. I think E-Loader recognizes pattern bank dumps by
filenames, so you could copy the the file, renaming it appropriately,
and then use E-Loader to populate the whole bank with copies of this
preset. While this can sound tedious, is probably faster than saving
the pattern 127 times in XL7.

First, congrats on sucessfully to OS2.0. Midi clock is much more stable, so if you are using your E-MU as a clock master, you'll probably appreciate that.

Second, I recommend creating a placeholder pattern template that has all channel assignments to external. You will then need placeholder data (such as CC7 = 127 on all channels) to keep each track from reseting to the default when you save the pattern. I'd recommend putting that at slot 000^0, then just copy it when you want to do create a new pattern. Or, as Bruno suggested, you can copy that template to as many pattern slots as you want. You can use e-loader, or you can just copy them withing the E-Mu.

If you have an empty E-Mu preset (I leave one at 000^0) you can set up all 32 E-Mu channels to point to the empty preset and then save the settings as a multisetup.

Preserving pattern templates using dummy data (such as all tracks going out externally) has been descussed before. I will try to find some links to additional discussion.

Hope this helps.

There are other things you can do, such as embed sysex commands in a pattern directed towards you external gear.

Hope this helps.

Maybe it is in my settings, but I find in order to record data for external gear using the command station controls I have to assign a silent dumby preset to the channel and set the channel midi out to both (internal and external). It plays back fine on ext, but will not record correctly. If you are using your external gear's interface to send midi out (with local control off) to the CS and back out to your ext gear, it may not be an issue. I try to avoid any physical midi loops for a live performance setup, so; I have rarely setup even at home in that manner.

This is intriguing. Its been years since I recorded music on the E-Mu sequencer intended for external gear. I seem to remember having to get the midi wiring and the rechannelize settings just right. I might play around with this when I get a chance.

When you say it plays back fine, but will not record correctly, that sounds familiar--until I got the wiring and settings worked out.

Good advice: In live performances, avoid looping midi data back into your controllers. (Is that a correlary of Murphy's Law?) ;-)

Hi,

Renaming the patterns and loading via e-loader turned out to be the easiest way. Actually it was incredibly easy setting up the external devices, worked the first time I tried.

Footnote:
If you are using E-Mu's usb connection sequence transfers at least 3-4x faster than mid transfers.

BTW, your discussion has prompted me to dig out my own external gear pattern templates and give a go at sequencing external gear patterns on the fly!

Yeah fire up the external gear. It really is a beast of sequencer. I was just using it control my esq-1, which can play up to 8 patches simultaneously. I can set them all to separate channels on the xl-7 and go bezerk. I also have the programmable knobs controlling the esq-1's modulators.

Yes I do this too to sequence 2 external synths but I have no recording issues. Where exactly is the problem? What doesn't record correctly?

If a track is set to ext and the MIDI information is not routed back into the CS and when I play the external synth using the CS keypads, recording in realtime mode nothing gets recorded for the track. I need to record with the track set to both (int and ext) to hear what I'm playing on the external synth and record it.

set 'rechannelize input' to either always or on record. i also have the midi mode set to omni. even with rechannelize off i can still sequence my samplers with tracks set to ext.
