This is intriguing. Its been years since I recorded music on the E-Mu sequencer intended for external gear. I seem to remember having to get the midi wiring and the rechannelize settings just right. I might play around with this when I get a chance.
When you say it plays back fine, but will not record correctly, that sounds familiar--until I got the wiring and settings worked out.
Good advice: In live performances, avoid looping midi data back into your controllers. (Is that a correlary of Murphy's Law?) ;-)

It plays back fine on ext, but will not record correctly. If you are using your external gear's interface to send midi out (with local control off) to the CS and back out to your ext gear, it may not be an issue. I try to avoid any physical midi loops for a live performance setup, so; I have rarely setup even at home in that manner.
