Newbie help

Newbie help

2001-09-16 by gary saville

Hey all,

After programing notes into the grid sequencer, is there a way to set the lenth of the sustain of the triggerd note? ie-the lenth of a bass note.
The velocity and key are displayed on the screen, but I cannot find anyway to ajust the gate while in grid mode. Do you have to edit the grid loops in the step mode?

Thx.

Hey gary,

I think you could do the proper modification to a preset by pereset edit
menu, but i just went through it, and didn't find any sustain or gate
parameter that could be adjusted. You may find and tweak other parameter to
get the same result though, but i don't know exactely which ones.
Anybody know more?

Kamy

Well I don't own an XL-7 (just yet still saving ;[ ) That said my RM is still doing me alright bar the crappy voice editing functions. Well anyways back on topic. Grid sequencing is based on the old Roland style XOX drum machine interface. It generally isn't applied to the purpose of melody writing (of course it is excellent for drum programming). Now I have downloaded the PDF manual and from what I can see you should be using the step entry method whereby you enter a notes value ,its velocity, gate time (as in note duration), note rests, note ties etc ....
This can get rather tedious on any sequencer (particularly with long musical passages). My suggestion is slow your sequencer down to half tempo, play the melody/ bass line etc in real time. Quantise to the nearest 16th note don't necessarily quantise at 100% either add and experiment with swing and gate times also. Then play back the results at your desired tempo. Then if required use the step edit functions for correcting any errors, shifting notes slightly, altering gate times and velocity etc to get the desired effect your after. Hope that helps somewhat....

I don't think grid programing needs to be that restrictive though.. Well, guess I'll live with it.. the box sounds fantastic.. BUT HEY!! If you EMU programers are out there, you should get some interface tips from Reason's Matrix grid sequencer.. it would be very easy to give the same functionality to the lcd on the emu. (future os update maybe?)

Cheers.
