ROM Decisions - HELP!

ROM Decisions - HELP!

2011-01-07 by nenad.lonic

Hi all, I currently have an XL-7 with three Roms, the X-Lead (expanded one??), a Composer Rom, and a Beat Garden Rom.

I'm trying to decide what to put into the fourth slot. I make deep, experimental, minimal, techno etc and the obvious choice would be Techno Synth Construction yard, but I'm not sure what sounds it would give me over what I have already.
I am already satisfied with kicks, bases, hi-hats, sub bases, snares, electro sounding pianos etc. The Xlead rom is choking full of synth sounds, but a lot of them are not useable for what I do. I just think I'm lacking some quirky sounds, glitchy, metallic sounds and also warm fuzzy synth stuff.

I'm wandering about the Ensoniq Halo or the ZR-76 roms. Anyone have these and care to comment on their sounds, it would be much appreciated.

P.S. The Composer is very underated in my opinion. I've seen them selling for $50 on ebay, so if you don't have one and have a spare slot, get it! You really need a good midi keyboard to unleash it's potential.

The "Halo" (QROM) and "sounds of the ZR" (ZR) ROMs have identical waveforms but
the halo variant has 5 banks of presets rather than 4. The useful contents are
pretty much identical except for the extra bank, so get that one if you can. The
'Perfect piano" is quite nice. TSCY seems to be what you want, however.

i've got XL, BG, TSCY & HALO.

you'll probably get the most mileage out of the TSCY.

You can check out the contents of the Halo ROM by downloading the HALO operation
manual from the support section of the E-MU web site and reading through the
preset listings. Like most generalist keyboards it has a mix of everything.

The TSCY preset listing can be found in the Orbit 3 operation manual from the
same site. It has stuff more oriented towards techno with drums, hits and pads.
THis seems to be what you want, but if you want both then additional modules can
be got for not too much capital outlay these days...
