flash roms

flash roms

2010-12-25 by James Ulibarri

Anyone else besides Duncan who is successfully having any luck with burning their owns Emu flash roms?
I think this might be my next project. And I mean with an Ultra sampler and blank 16mb/32mb flash roms.

I know this has came up before regarding which unit has the better filters, etc. An Ultra sampler or the CS?
Does anyone have any feedback on this? My initial thoughts would be the Ultra sampler because it may have more processing
power, but I am not sure at all. They could have similar processors, etc.

I have cooled out on the whole Emu vintage verses things semi modern machines like the Command Station. They both have their strengths. But I need to get this going soon. It9;s either this or a Yamaha A4000/A5000 sampler. I need tons of effects and clockable tempo synced LFO's, etc.

Anyone selling any Emu working flash roms?

the weaknesses of the AxK samplers are load (and save) time and SCSI. the
strengths are effects and having each key within a patch playing any
sample.

on-board editing is also nice, but mostly it's stuff that most people
would do in software before loading the samples into the sampler.

also consider how many outputs you need; if the AxK has the expansion
board; the feasibility of outboard effects...

More weaknesses include the frankly bizarre and unintuitive OS and the
fact you can't auto-load on power-up, so every time you switch on you're
menu-diving. Hated my A5000 with a passion; YMMV.

the OS is what it is. if you're accustomed to akai or emu, then yeah, it's
weird.

i'm looking forward to having a USB-flash-ROM for the cs/p2k, and then
i'll be happy to sell my A4000.

Yeah, I spent sometime with the PX-7 tonight and did about 5 hours with it and put the synth engine through it's paces. But I am not gonna be messing with the flash roms after all. The engine is just too thin for my kind of dirty dub techno. It's actually thinner than software. I did some A/B tests with a brand new Allen and Heath mixer and Emu monitors. No... pass.

Hey, it makes a great Ableton controller.
