record quality sound - midi clock issue in command station?

record quality sound - midi clock issue in command station?

2010-09-14 by mariusz_ot

Hi!
I've been happily using e-mu romplers for few years now, together with Presonus Firebox and Ableton Live. I recently bought a digital cable to hook my Px-7 and record better quality sound.

The problem is the sound I hear in Win XP (even from foobar, etc.) is clearly slowed down by few cents like in a turntable record:/ No matter the sample rate in Presonus setup. I have my PX-7 connected to my Presonus Firebox via Spdif cable to send digital audio in. Although MIDI Clock in command station is turned off, my pc behaves like a slave.
There's no such problem if I connect it to analog (noisy) inputs, even with midi cables connected and working without a glitch! Unfortunately I can't test my Firebox with other spdif connection now.
Any guesses?

I would guess that the data rate of the firebox is different to the sample rate
of the digital data from the PX7. The rate of the data is not so important (as
long as you transfer enough of it to prevent gaps) but the digital signal needs
to be converted back to analogue at the appropriate rate.

The sample rate of the firebox would be the rate that it converts analogue to
digital not necessarily the expected digital data rate.

Since the sound is only slightly slowed down, I would guess that something in
your system is running at 44kHz rather than the 44.1kHz of the proteus 2k. This
would be the play back rate of either the firebox driver or the audio codec
being used to play the sound on your computer.

Your guess wa right! Howver it was 48kHz in my system that was changed to 44kHz by CS. I used 48khz for Premiere and switched it back to 44kHz but I wasn't aware the fact that Presonus driver for some reasons kept switching it back. Thanks for saving time. I would still probably focus on midi clock to find the solution.
Cheers!
