midi thru?

midi thru?

2010-08-19 by James Ulibarri

I need to throw midi from one PX-7 sequencer and from a midi Doepfer sequencer to one Lexicon Ionix U82S USB interface
that only has one midi input. Does the PX-7 allow midi pass through if I connect the Doepfer sequencer to the Emu? Does anyone know if the Command Stations do this?

Thanks,
James

It really depends on what you want to do with midi clock. Command Stations will merge some incoming data (eg, note, CC, AT data) with its own output (via ports A and/or B) but not midi clock/timing data. (See MIDI MERGE menu item in the MIDI menu system.) So, if you want to slave midi clock from the Doepfer sequencer to the PX-7 and then have the same midi clock going to something else via the Lexicon, you would need something that would allow you to distribute the midi clock to several destinations (such as a midi router or a midi thru box).

If you want to slave the PX-7 from the Doepfer sequencer and have the combined note, CC, AT data going to something on the Lexicon, the PX-7 will pass the data you want through (merged with whatever midi data is directed to the port you have chosen to use).

Another option to consider is using the PX-7 as clock master since you can send it out to up to two ports (A & B). You could then send it to the Doepfer and the Lexicon. I don't know if that configuration will solve what you are trying to accomplish, but it just might--depending on what you are doing with other gear/software.

Hope this helps.

Steve,

Thanks for the info and your thoughts. I think to save me a lot of headaches on this I will be only sending one sequencer to the Lexicon interface. And then I will send the other sequencer (emu or doepfer) to my akai or emu sampler(s). One unit will be the master generating midi clock for everything and then one will be slaved and sending note/CC information to a sampler. And then I will simply run one midi cable to each sequencer while one sends MTC. No use hammering the Lexicon when ultimately I am going to be taking out at least one sampler also. This will make things simple. As long as I keep the midi channels are dedicated to each unit I won't have to worry about filtering as nothing is passing through each other. This is the most logical configuration for my simple setup I feel.

Thanks,
James
