Rack Ears???

Rack Ears???

2010-04-12 by frendn8

Does anyone out there have a pair of Rack Ears for a Command Station for sale?

Or is there any substitution available?

I called Richard (who is super cool I might add) from EPRElectronics and he is out. The Avenues Instruments seems to be out of commission all together (no response/no contact).

Someone please help me out.

Aloha,

-Nate

Nate - you have asked this same question a couple of times across 2 groups with so far, no response yet. I have a set of rack ears that I am not using but have no plans of selling....I grabbed them a couple of years ago I off of eBay when a dealer was dumping his stock. Here are my thoughts:

- the ears are rare and if there is any chance one might use them, they will probably not sell them. If some responds, it may be someone selling their command station. However, sales on eBay show a command station with rack ears increases the overall price of the unit by more than the price of the rack ears.

- You can wait until someone world wide is selling their ears on eBay and bid....going price will probably be between $60 and $85 usd, or more..

- I was lucky to the XL7 ears but considered making my own by (a) buying a set of rack ears of the right length for a different piece of equipment like a small mixer or a large network switch (eBay again). (B) Then create the necessary spacers with plastic, wood or metal to fill in any space, if any, between the command station side and the rack ear.

I just checked, the last eBay transaction for "the Avenues", the music store that used to have the rack ears, was in October 2009....I think this is the same store I bought mine from 2 years ago.....

Re: [xl7] Rack Ears???

2010-04-13 by Nathaniel

Hello Bob,

Thanks for the response.

I sold an MP-7 on eBay with both the plastic ends and the Ears and got jack for the whole thing and lost even more money shipping to Argentina. Then a month later I sold a beat ip XL-7 and got $100 more for it with just the end caps.

I don't know if they really do add any value. If so, it didn't work for me.

I should have just kept them, but I too thought it would increase the value an I had no use at the time. In the evolution of my studio I now see the need and can't find them anywhere.

I will scower the bay, but who knows when they will show up again.

I must also mention that I find it interesting how many people email me responses about how they have what I'm looking for, but are not willing to sell it. Why even mention it? I must thank the group in reguards to the the ZR rom post I made. I got one from a fellow in Slovakia in 4 days to me here in Hawaii and it worked perfectly!

Let me know if you change your mind.

I'm down to buy them at a decent price.

Aloha,
-Nate

Re: [xl7] Rack Ears???

Hello again Bob,

I bought a PX-7 from them a year ago and never received it. I tried to call them over and over, but it said "call cannot be completed." I also emailed several times with no response. I then had to open a PayPal claim and wait 14 more days to get my money back.

I don't know if anyone is there.

Thank you for the info though.

In furtherance of this, I have rack ears on my XL-7 and would be willing to trade them for a PX-7 with endcaps.

Also- what's the demand here- it's a piece of bent metal with a few holes drilled...
I have access to a machine shop so I could crank out a bunch of sets if the demand was there...

Does anyone out there have a pair of Rack Ears for a
Command Station for sale?

Or is there any substitution available?

I called Richard (who is super cool I might add) from
EPRElectronics and he is out. The Avenues
Instruments seems to be out of commission all
together (no response/no contact).

Someone please help me out.

DIY Rack Ears

2010-04-13 by Dumeril

With all the talk about how rare and expensive the Command Station rack ears are, I figured I'd share this...

I made my own rack ears out of 1" by 1" aluminum extrusion, that I got from Home Depot or Lowe's (can't remember which). Its just an L-shaped length of aluminum (1/8" thick) that you can cut with a hacksaw and drill out.

I cut it to the same length as the original plastic ears of the Command Station, then rounded the corners a little with a file. I drilled all the holes with a regular hand drill. If like me, you don't have a drill press, then the drill bit can slip around on the aluminum which will put the holes off-the-mark. So I used a centerpunch to make a little dimple in the aluminum at the proper location, set the bit into the dimple and then I was able to drill the holes perfectly by hand. A centerpunch is basically like a heavier metal ice pick that you strike with a hammer to put a sharp dent in the aluminum. You can get a centerpunch for less than $10 at Lowe's/Home Depot as well. I elongated the rack mounting holes using a rat-tail file.

Total investment was about $20. The only downside is that the extrusion won't cover some gaps in the Command Station chassis (you'll see what I mean if you remove the plastic ears). For those I just covered them with small pieces of tape to keep dust out. Not the prettiest solution, but it doesn't cost $50 - $60 like the Emu rack ears either. ;)

Thank you buddy!

That is the best thing I heard so far out of this ongoing rant ;)

I just talked to my friend who is currently in college taking a welding class and we were discussing relatively the same thing.

Thanks for the info.

The project begins!

Hey, you can even use these with less cutting, filing and drilling....these are a little longer than needed....the command station unit is 6U in height (10.5"), so you can find rack ears that size and just drill the command station mount holes...

That's it!

Thanks Bob. You are awesome.
I was on this track last night.

BTW: Robert from Avenues Instrument replied to my email...
Rack Rars plus shipping is $71

Man that is a lot for a couple pieces of molded metal.
But you guys have them and I don't. I guess that is how it goes ;)
