used XL-7 functionality run through

2009-11-18 by bobsvitilla

I just purchased a used XL-7. It should be arriving early next week. Can any experienced users give me a check-list run through to check that my instrument is fully functioning? I read the quick start section in the manual and that should cover a lot of the testing I am looking for, but was wondering if there was any "make sure you check this" type stuff.

Thanks
Bob

make sure to check that edited user arpeggios survive a reboot. my xl-1 (same "synth engine") fails to save user arpeggios (they (kind of randomly) reset to defaults on reboot).
probably the same could happen for presets, so test user preset editing/saving capability too.

There are a few self-test routines you can do.

Hold the left & right cursor buttons while switching on to get into diagnostic mode. Some of the tests overwrite stored data so be careful if there's stuff you don't want to lose.

Thanks for the info.
I plan on checking the OS and updating if needed and doing a factory restore if possible to start with a clean slate.
I read somewhere about arps not surviving when some sort of function was performed but I don't quite remember what it was. Something to do with, if the machine locks up and you have to perform something to get it working again the user arps are gone. Are you saying the XL-1 looses its user created arps every time you power down or just if it locks up.
Is there any way to back up user arps to a computer?

i tested arp editing on a Mo'Phatt which worked as expected.
but there is something that makes me wonder...i can edit an arp pattern, switch to another arp pattern and load the previous edited arp pattern again just fine. this suggests that the memory management of the device goes beyond just managing ane preset/arp slot for every channel (in which case every item would be overwritten whenever you change a preset or arp on a channel).
also, it doesnt matter which arp pattern i edit (0..99), they all dont survive the reboot. this (and the fact that i can edit presets just fine) suggests that there is a seperate flash memory for the user arp patterns which (in my case) fails to do write operations.

anyone has another idea/more info/the same problem?

sure, you can use any "sysex to file" tool (midiox (win), sysex librarion (mac)) to get a backup.
