prodatum v0.39

prodatum v0.39

2009-09-08 by Jane

greetings,

i have just uploaded v0.39. it supports config file selection from the
command line which is useful for people with multiple modules as you
can now have one config for each device, completely with MIDI setup,
color scheme and all those preferences; see the hints page for
examples on how to use that new switch. this version also tries to
hide stuff that i assumed to be there but is not (eg some ROMs don't
come with arpeggios or riffs and we don't want them to show up in the
rom selectors/browsers). please let me know of any problems you might
encounter, my ROMs all have riffs and arpeggios. please also let me
know about anything that still looks odd (like lots of 'ff' or '(not
installed)' or similar entries in the browsers.

changelog for v0.39:

* further cleanups (removed dump test routines, no longer needed, yay)
* new cli option '-c' allows to load a different config file (useful
for using prodatum with multiple devices)
* stop riff loading when we receive an 'ff' riff name
* some ROMs don't have arpeggios; we don't want those to show up in
the ROM selectors (needs testing, please report problems)
* "force controls to selected channels" enabled by default
* "Confirm Exit" defaults to off
* changed default color scheme
* Mac version compiled on Snow Leopard (v0.38 was SL compatible
already, Tiger/Leopard and PPC platforms still supported)

cheers,
Jan

Jane,

I recently had the chance to catch up on your Prodatum editor, which I was
tracking distantly with the XL7 group. Your concept of having it
multiplatform and the reasons behind is definitely filling a need.

The program is nicely laid out, and immediately picked up on my Proteus 2500
with all 4 ROMS identified. Compared to SoundDiver which took forever to
load and bogged down or timed out with more than one ROM, it was a pleasant
surprise. I went downstairs thinking it would be similar load time and was
pleased to come back and see the quick load of all ROMS, programs, riff etc.
I am exploring the other windows and am very impressed.

I thought I had read in your various postings that mouse wheel control was
in place for some of the parameters. For me rotary dial control for cutoff
etc. would be enhanced with the addition of mouse wheel control. I tested
this briefly but did not see that control present. I never have cared for
turning the rotary dial with the mouse. I don't believe it is a clean motion
for that control. The incremental movement of the mouse wheel would be
finer.

One quick question, did I miss a Prodatum functionality that identifies the
MIDI sequences stored on a Proteus workstation like the 2500?

Thanks for your hard work on such a great program for the Proteus.

By the way, what language are you programming Prodatum in?

the mousewheel can control any slider, choice or knob. just hover the
control and wheel. make sure the window you try this in has the focus.

do you mean arpeggio patterns? you can edit those (see the arpeggiator
sections).
you cannot edit the sequencer patterns of command stations. does the
p2.5k have a similar sequencer?

Glad to see you are continuing to work on Prodatum, Jan. I will have to check out the new version.

Recently I got turned onto MIDI over IP (LAN) for the PC. My first test was with Prodatum, and it passed with flying colors. I fired up Prodatum on a remote computer with a usb keyboard (new installation on the 2nd computer). Even with all the sysex communication involved, Prodatum (0.38) successfully communicated via LAN with my XL-1. I was able to use the arp editor as a real-time performance tool remotely with no snags. (I just wish I could have multiple arp windows to play up to 32 arps in realtime!!!)

Kudos to you for Prodatum!!!

hehe, what kind of (huge) display do you use? anyway, theoretically
its possible to have multiple editors for "parallel" arp editing. of
course i cant promise to add that functionality but i wouldnt say its
a bad idea either...its probably a bit too exotic to get on my high
priority list though.

Anyone else here still running a PPC Mac?
I can't open v0.39 on my 10.4 PowerMac - although v.37 and v.38 work quite well.

I LOVE this app!
It really opens up the the full potential of these Emu machines!

Nice! Not only response within 24 hours (on the weekend yet) - but a link with the solution!

That is to say, Yes this appears to work quite well...

the question, for me, of course is: how much would you pay for
prodatum (if you didn't already purchased it for free)?

JanE ...

She ain't Jane, he's Jan E ... and he should fix his name!

Anyway, a serious answer.

Given the comparison to MidiQuest XL ... a bloated, buggy, overambitious and mostly useless piece of software that retails for $399.00 ... here's what I would do.

I'd sell Prodatum for about $49.00 with one system. In this case the already available E-mu 2000 system.

Then I'd sell additional system modules for about $29.00 ... say for different Korg, Roland, etc., systems.

The beauty of learning a single interface and then being able to apply it to different hardware would be better than any dedicated software a synth manufacturer could make.

If you started with some of the older but still popular synths and then moved into the present generation, at the above price structure I think you'd make a very nice living.

Re: [xl7] prodatum v0.39

2009-10-03 by Paul Vickers

Hi there

I've been a lurker on this list for a long while. I just downloaded
prodatum 0.40 to use with my P2500k. Now here's the problem -- I don't
know how to get started. I've connected the Midisport 2x2 to my
Macbook Pro, I've hooked its output to the P25k's MIDI in and the
P25k's OUT A to the input on the Midisport. I run Prodatum and select
the MIDI sport as the I/O devices.

So far so good, but then what? I have a lot of empty parameter screens
on prodatum and pulling up its keyboard screen and pressing piano keys
doesn't lead to any sound on the P25k.

a) am I just missing something completely obvious here?
b) can I upload the current settings of the P25k into prodatum for
editing?

Sorry for the naive questions but I am a bit stuck here...

Thanks

d'oh!

*** embarrassed face ***

I had accidentally plugged the midi cable into OUT-B on the MidiSport
thinking it was OUT-A, hence the Open button was always greyed out.
