some q's

some q's

2009-07-14 by massimo

Hello, mew list member here.

I've got a few questions about the Command Stations (OS 2.0) that you folks might be able to help with. Here we go -

1. Will it record and play back sysex data for other synths?*

2. Does transmitting MIDI clock while slaved to another MIDI clock work properly?**

3. Can song mode really not record pattern play events in realtime?

4. What's the empty chip socket on the main board?

Cheers!

* I've tried sending stuff from a controller but it doesn't seem to be recorded or passed through. CCs work fine of course.

** Have tried slaving it to Cubase and it doesn't seem to pass the MIDI clock through.

Well I know the answers to #1 and #2

Yes it will record sysex from external devices make sure in the midi page it is set to do so tho first.
And you can select a midi thru option to send the clock thru to the other devices.

I haven't tried much in song mode yet sorry and I never noticed an empty socket unless you mean for additional sound chips.

Actually, #1 is "no" and "yes". No, it will not record sysex. Yes, it will play back sysex! I know that sounds stupid (and it is) but what it does allow you to do is load a sequence up to your computer via E-Loader, add the sysex to it with your favorite sequencer, then download it again. Lame, but it's a workaround.

Furthermore, #2 is yes, though not through passthrough. MIDI Clock is stripped from "Soft-Thru" but it WILL regenerate clock while slaved.

#3 yep, with OS 2.0 you can RT record pattern changes and mutes.

#4 not sure which one you're talking about, but there's at least one empty socket for OS updating via EEPROM chip instead of MIDI.

Thanks chaps.

OK, so I guess sysex isn't passed through either. Not a big problem, it tends to clog things up anyway.

As for MIDI clock, it doesn't seem to send it while slaved. I've tried various combinations of having Transmit MIDI Clock and Merge on and off, in case that was it. The best I can get is just to have it pick up the song start message while generating MIDI clock, but that means it's not really locked to the other sequencer, and of course tempo changes won't do anything.

There are a couple of MIDI devices hanging off the Command Station and none of them seem to be getting MIDI clock when it's slaved. I had this working with a Yamaha sequencer fwiw.

Song mode - recording mute events in real time is fine but I cannot get it to real time record pattern changes at all, either manually selected or using the trigger buttons. If all the changes are entered in step mode then the mute settings of the patterns override any real time entered mutes when the patterns change making this less useful anyway.

I've tried using record in + and replace modes. The triggers are set to go to the sequencer in case that made a difference.

So what am I doing wrong???

Thanks again,

Massimo

Sorry I've only had an mp7 for a month or two. :P
At least we know now.

Re: [xl7] some q's

Well it seems I've come to the right place.

If anyone can answer my questions Aaron can. I'm glad that someone so involved in the project is still providing support.

Thanks,

Massimo

Re: rt song mode and regen midi clock

2009-07-18 by massimo

Aaron, I really appreciate your replying to these queries but do these two things actually work?

I can't get it to regenerate MIDI clock when slaved.

And I can't see how to real time record pattern changes.

I'd really like to hear from anyone who has managed to do either with an XX-7.

Cheers,

Massimo
