prodatum classic beta now

prodatum classic beta now

2009-07-07 by Jane

greetings,

prodatum classic (http://prodatum.sf.net/) is now beta. it works with
p1k and p2k modules as well as with command stations (finally!) on
mac, windows and linux. you should definitely check it out if you
haven't already.

features:
* all editing is done in the edit buffer (nothing is being changed
until you choose to save)
* mixer-like main-view for the most important voice settings
* realtime controllers and FX settings also in the main-view
* right-click any parameter to return to the initial preset value
* undo/redo
* arpeggiator pattern editor with beat:ticks length calculation
* voice muting/soloing
* sysex/midi-event log

the virtual keyboard features:
* modwheel, pitchwheel and footswitches
* easy layering of voices
* easy creation of split keyboard setups

..and much more.

cheers,
JanE

Thanks for all your hard work and for sharing Prodatum, Jan. Glad to hear you solved the issue with the Command Stations. (For these who are interested in the nitty gritty, some of the sysex commands as found in sysex manual do not work with Command Stations and the P2500, but do work with P2K [non-sequencer] units.)

I have started to gear up to do a little bit of recreational music for the summer, and have just hooked up an Evolution MK-449C usb keyboard. I hope to take the newest version of Prodatum for a test drive.

My son is into gnulinux [gnuwsense, I think] and will try to get him to give it a test drive, too.

WOW!!! Just been doing a quick test drive (about 5-10 minutes)and there is so much improvement. Favorites (so far): interactive envelope windows and case-sensitive search/navigation filters. Great job, Jan!!!

Re: prodatum classic beta now

(1) Suggestion for those having trouble downloading from Jan's Prodatum page: When I got to the "Your prodatum download will begin shortly . . ." page, I clicked on direct link to get the Windows zip file of Prodatum.

(2) For those test driving Prodatum, be sure to check out the hints (http://prodatum.sourceforge.net/doc/hints.html) available via Prodatum's Help menu.

(3) Jan,I really like the mousewheel functionality!!!!! For those who haven't tried it, when your mouse hovers over lists (and a few other places, too), the mousewheel scrolls the list (very handy). For envelopes, the mousewheel scrolls through the choices (volume, filter, auxiliary). For knobs, the mousewheel changes values.

(4) Question for you, Jan: How do I get to see controllers M-N-O-P [P2500]?

(5) For those test driving Prodatum, I highly recommend enabling Tooltips [Help Menu checkbox].

Jan, you did a great job with the user interface; I am finding it extremely user-friendly.

you normally should just wait a bit, like 3-5 seconds, and read the
ad ;)

do you have multiple proteus devices and switched from one that does
not have the M N O P controllers? because those are currently added
(or not, depending on the deivce you have opened first) only on the
first incoming preset dump.
so, if so, just restart prodatum before you switch from a p1k model to
a p2k model for now, until i can fix this.
if not (or the M N O P don't show up after a restart (make sure
autoconnect is disabled so you really connect to the p2.5k first)),
could you run the test (File > Run Test), zip up the prodatum_out
folder and send it to me?

thank you so much. compare it to the first prodatum version...i
thought that interface was good back then. took me a while to realize
that it is in fact... ugly. BUT, in the process of doing it, i have
learned much about the proteus device (and synthesizers in general)
and that enabled me to make a new design that kind of fits the hardware.

This looks neat as all get-out, and I look forward to trying it out with my XL-7, once I get that set back up.

One question I have 'cuz I'm too lazy to look for myself: The current release of the OS (that I know of) now allows for a voice to be triggered on key release. This allows one to, for example, add the sound of the damper going back on the strings on a cheap piano. Does prodatum make programming this sort of thing easy?

it should be a matter of creating a/some patchcord(s) for the voice
that should sound on key release. you can edit patchcords using
prodatum.

i don't know what sort of patchcords you would need though. maybe
RlsVel and SRetrig?

Hi there Jan, well..well.... what can I say..from here in New Zealand....except brilliant...yeeha. ;-) c o o L !!

That is just fantastic, hooked Prodatum up to the Command Station and away I went, havn't stopped playing with it for like three days, it's given the Command Station the kick-in-the-pants it needed, I can be so productive now....I'm getting all sorts of exciting sounds out of the yellow box. I have even been doing happy happycore tunes at 170 to 180 bpm...hehe.

I really impressed with the keyboard, layering and xfade...that's something that's been too hard for me via the machine's green screen, I can see all sorts of possibilities now. Just love the mouse wheel data interface A++ for values, really neat.

So yeah it's run really great, I sorta forgot about the testing role and have been full-on using, so I guess you can take that as very positive. It's only crashed once in many hours of use, but I blame the happy hardcore for that.

Just wanted to let you know and that I'm still very interested in your work.

Great job!!

Yeeha
Steve

Jan, thank you for your efforts!
I tried the prodatum editor yesterday with my XL-7, seems to work fine.
A couple of small questions:

- Customizable color scheme is a nice touch, but how can I save my preference? It reverts to the default color scheme on restart.

- Is it possible to copy layers?

Again, thanks a lot!
Boris.

it saves the config when you quit normally (not killed or not
crashed). it loads and saves it from/to the current directory. you
should not move the prodatum.exe around if you want it to find your
previous settings.
this will change once all dump related problems have been fixed
(currently there are still some problems with audity 2k dumps).

Jan ...

This absolutely 'kicks butt' of all the other editors out there.
r
Why don't you give that buggy Midiquest a real run for the money?

You could just sell individual modules for each synth as opposed to the bloated nightmare that Midiquest provides. First one with the program and then additional modules at a reduced price.

I'd love to see one of your designs for my old Roland JD-990 and Korg M1 REX!

Then if you and Royce could work on developing something to map the Behringer BCR 2000 to your editor you two would rule the software/ hardware nexus.

Thank so much!

i would love to. because it would mean that i own all those synths ;)
doing it without those is boring for me and i would rely on others to
test a lot which would also slow down the development.

Jan,

I have lots of crashes. Mainly related to changing instruments
in the main window. I can easily reach a state where a crash
loop occurs - that is, until I delete the prodatum_out folder.

Also, there's something problematic with the current implementation.
This way I have to redownload the ROM all the time when such
a crash loop occurs - not good.

Where should I send the error logs?

Also, USB operation is a possibility in the future?
Maybe not, but Aaron should know better...

Zsolt, this is fixed in v0.37 (currently not released as i want to get
the a2k dump parameter mapping right first, which should also work
already (code is there)... but i have no dump to test it).

well, theres nothing wrong with the implementation IMO. it saves the
files on exit and only on exit. saving all the time is not a fix for
the crashes.
for now, let it initialize, and close prodatum before you use it to
save the files.
hopefully i can release v0.37 tomorrow.

im not sure...if its just a "midi over usb" kind of thing you should
see the ports in prodatum. otherwise: no. prodatum knows midi only.

I can confirm the crashes at instrument changes.
(0.35win on XP with EMU 18120m and XL7)
I have tried the quit->restart trick before crash (for saving ROM information),
but it has every time started by the loading down/in process.

I hope 0.37 will help. :)

And i'm still very thankful for this software to you!

It makes so easy to create deeper combinations in presets,
and very good way to understand the logic of the proteus2K series.

I've been trying to get this program to work on windows 98 but am not having any luck.
I can get it to connect and upload the info/roms etc. but when clicking on the instrument list it say prodatum has caused an error and needs to be closed.
Again it only happens when selecting from the instrument list so I thought I'd let you know.

Maybe you have some idea of how to over come this?
Thanks for all the great work.

maybe it's a driver thing. you should use the drivers for your MIDI
hardware. don't use the windows drivers.

if drivers do not fix it i would need more information. please set
"Debug" to "Most" (in Open Device) and provoke a crash, open
debuglog.txt from the prodatum_out folder, scroll to the end, and send
me the last 20 lines from it.
btw, i haven't tested prodatum on win 98 yet. it should work though...

I have a Windows 98 PC nearby. I will try to test Beta 0.37 on it some time today. The test will probably be with the built-in sound card's midi port. (I know I have a few joystick/MIDI cables here someplace.) I believe its still (or mostly) a 1999 vintage Aptiva, probably with the original sound card drivers.

Re: prodatum classic beta now: Win 98

2009-07-16 by steve_the_composer

I have done some tests with the Win98. Results are inconclusive.

A. Getting data (initialization) causes lock up; cold reboot needed
(1) Ports detected; P2500 and ROMs detected
(2) Prodatum and P2500 communicate for about 10 seconds then stop
(3) PC slows to a standstill
(4) 0 byte config file created; no other files in prodatum_out

B. To test further, I copied the P2500's data from the XP
(1) Ports, P2500, ROMs detected; changed ports (ESS MPU 401)
(2) Prodatum seemed to handle the data
(2) Switching to a particular channel caused a lock up

I will try some more testing, including with another Win98 PC.

Re: prodatum classic beta now: Win98 test

2009-07-16 by steve_the_composer

PS: On the Win98 with the P2500 data files from the XP, I tried Testing Dumps. It looked like Prodatum and the P2500 were communicating [green and red midi led indicators flashing). I thought all was well, but when I looked, I had the following:

Warning: The Read Buffer overflows (13x)
Data is lost!
Raise the Read Buffer Size
("Options --> Advanced")

I could not cancel, stop, or terminate Prodatum; however, the top line switched from 13x to 112x.

Hope this helps.

did you use the drivers from the manufacturer of that soundcard/midi
hardware?

someone please comfort me... ;)

Has anybody got it working under OSX?

This newest version is working great with my command station and OSX
10.5. Previously it would always crash while getting the presets from
the machine. Very Nice app....better than all the commercial programs
IMHO

What MIDI interface are you using? (I'm assuming that it's not designed to go straight USB.)

There is no Emu USB driver for OSX, so no functionality there at all
The interface I'm currently connected to is a Emagic AMT8, it also
worked with a MOTU MTP
