Well,I'm going tell you that both are nice units.I own a mpc 5000 midi with a Fantom x6 and two MP-7's.I love my mpc,but I still find myself working with the mp-7's.I feel that the only thing that a mpc has over the emu unit's is a sampler. When e mu made the xl7,mp7 and the px7 it was their verson of the ASR,and ASR pro. They should have added a sampler, and it would still be on the market today. If you own a sampler already, the only reason I would to add an mpc is to satify my client's.

There is no Akai VS xl-7. Thats like asking if you want pasta or sauce. They are two totally different things, but work great together. If you can only get one, get the XL-7. If you can afford both get both.
