value changes without using the jog wheel?

value changes without using the jog wheel?

2009-01-07 by Simon Rodeghiero

hi all. I'm new to this group, so howdy!

The jog wheel on my XL-7 jumps erratically when i try change a value
quickly, in that it can jump from Preset 006 to 052 in a flash for
example. Just wondering if anyone can tell me the cause and if there
is a fix? I can't imagine why EMU did not offer a direct value entry
method (using 10 of the track /trigger buttons for instance). Also,
increment /decrement buttons would have been nice, but i guess there's
always something that would be nice..

This is all rather new to me so it has been an interesting process
(learning how to drive a command station). Will say that the V2
updates seem pretty much essential. Would have found it frustrating
trying to get quick results with previous version OS.

Overall, even though it feels kinda 'antiquated' compared to a DAW for
sequencing, it somehow actually works really well for this style of
comping. And that's without fully figuring it out so yeah, i think
it's gonna be a cool tool (even with a jumpy jogger).

Cheers

The jog wheel is sensitive to how fast you turn it... if you turn it hard and fast, it will jump through values very rapidly, but if you turn it slower, it will only increase 1 value for every click. In time, this feature will become one of your best friends, especially if you add other roms to the unit and have a lot of presets to sift through. You do have an increment/decrement value selector for tracks/channels which will change only the track or channel, but it's much quicker than using the jog wheel.

By the way, these can become even twitchier than design intended, and
that can be addressed by a spritz of spray.

It's all described in the thread "Cleaning the Big Knob":

that was one of the things i noticed missing when i first got one... i
wanted a 10-digit keypad for entering patterns. as i understand it, the
data wheels just get old and crusty, contact cleaner might help.

here's how to change patterns with sysex -

my jog wheel seems well behaved when i turn it slowly, but when i turn it
fast it seems like it randomly jumps forward and backward.

Hey guys (and DOLLs? in the XL-7 group), I have been a long time reader and once in a while I speak to the group.
This time I was just wondering if any of you have anything other than the XL-7?, I have all of them,(-the B3) and multiples of them.
I have a few that "jump around" and those come from where I couldn't test them first, Like Ebay, (do I get charged for saying that word? ha) I have a few that have this problem. Stripped? Worn out. If you weren't able to test the item before buying it, sometimes this happens, always,... Ask the question to them, does the data wheel "jump around" or does it move "fluidly". You should first tighten the knob and then make that determination. I have a lot more to talk about...

i wonder if the EMU launch pad may be a work around?? It would seem to
have the direct entry option, plus inc /dec buttons. I assume the
sysex would map out petty easily if not as default settings. Just a
thought (ouch)
