Can I edit song files outside?

Just for the fun of it, I took a look at a *.mid file of a song with
nothing more than a couple of patterns strung together. Other than the
headers/timing/sysex/etc. stuff, it looks like the patterns and mutes
are text characters. (I downloaded a song using e-loader and looked at
it with Microsoft's built-in debug program.)

I didn't go further with dissecting the song file, but I suppose if
someone wanted to write a utility to chain patterns and set mutes they
could do it and then add additional functionality to it. (It sur would
be nice to be able to do this via usb.)

Out of curiosity, what kinds of song file data do you want to edit
extrnally?

(I'm glad somebody had a good answer. Every time I see the subject
line in the message list, I'm tempted to reply, "Have you finished
your homework and cleaned your room?")
