entering a rest in step mode

entering a rest in step mode

2008-08-18 by just john

Right now, when doing step entry, the only way I know of to enter a
rest instead of a note is to take my hands (and eyes) off the keyboard
and tweak the clock with a move of the Big Knob. (And that's only if
I have the cursor in the right place, ahead of time.)

Is there some easier way? Sometimes I just hit a note a couple
octaves above or below the range I'm working, with an eye to
after-the-fact cuts, but that's also darned clumsy.

And I'm too clumsy to play a note with zero amplitude.

Hang on .... As I type this, I've thought of something to try:
Mapping a button or pad on my controller to a note, on a different
channel. That might be acceptable, if step entry allows for multiple
channel recording. Wait here a minute.

(Goes and tries something.)

Okay, I just did a multi-channel step recording using the entry pads
and shifting track/channel between notes. And yes, on playback, since
I can mute tracks, that works as a way to do rests. So if I map a
button on my controller to transmit a note on channel 16, then as long
as channel 16 is not play-enabled, that button acts as a rest.

You guys probably already knew this, I guess. Are there ways that are
easier yet?

Use grid recording.

No.

That's nothing like step-mode recording.

I use those two modes for totally different things.

UPDATE: That didn't work. Only steps on the displayed tracks were
recorded. The thing I tried before involved changing which track was
being displayed. Back to drawing board.

Just hit the Play button. It will insert one rest.

Great! Thanks.

Where's that documented? Or did you discover it on your own?

Heh, I actually took a look through the manual to see if it was there, but surprisingly (since the manual's pretty comprehensive) it's not. I think step mode came in near the end of project if I remember correctly, so maybe that's why.

That said, the Play button *IS* blinking the whole time you're in step record... ; )

PS. the "discover it" comment totally made me laugh! glad I could help.

Hey, if you can't discover new stuff, even in software you wrote
yourself, then you aren't really trying, are you?

So while we're on the subject of stuff that doesn't seem to be in the
documentation, and which up until now I'd assume wasn't available: Is
there a way to enable/disable pattern tracks via MIDI? (The desired
scenario is that, while a pattern is playing on the XL-7 and I'm
playing along on a keyboard controller, hitting a properly configured
button on the controller can enable or disable a specific track on the
pattern.)

(For extra credit, if it could trigger and also set the volume,
similar to as is done in the BTS patches, that would be nifty.

The Play button engages the transport, regardless of sequencer mode
(except in step edit). The LED in the button will be illuminated when the
sequence is running.

This is as close as it explains it.
My off/on button is flaking out also. If kicking it off with the
switch and no countdown isn't damaging I'm more than happy to use the
switch since everything's hooked up to a power strip.

Aaron, please don't tell me that there is also a way to increment the GATE TIME up to 100% on the Step-by-Rec mode, because I'm gonna cut my veins if there is a way to do that. I haven't found a way to record long notes on the step-by-rec mode.

I guess you're safe. I hesitated to check it out, lest I actually
found a way and thus endangered your life.

But curiosity got the better of me and I gave it a look. And I can't
find any way to change that number, either. It just sits there and
taunts you.
