Welcome New Members

Welcome New Members

2008-07-06 by steve_the_composer

Over the past month (since the list became "moderated"), a number of
new members have joined. (In addition, some possible spammers
requested membership, but were rejected.)

Sometimes new members hold back from posting for various reasons, so I
just wanted to make sure all new members (except for spammers) know
they are welcome to introduce themselves, ask questions, etc. We have
a number of very experienced members here, a number of relatively
inexperienced members here, and everything in between.

We also have an archives of accumulated wisdom and a few resources in
the files section (including two FAQ/Tips/Tricks Sheets).

Welcome!

Hi Steve,

Member since a few years already, I send for the E-mu community, a
small treasure:
The file script, Excel format containing the majority of scripts XX7
and PK2, for Cubase or Nuendo.
To use them, copy the script in the memo pad, rename this to txt
format, and paste it in the directory requested.

Is my donation, several hours of long writing !
Good music for group.

Best regards.

Proteus 2500 patterns

2008-07-06 by BEOWOLF

Hi,

I have an MP7 that I use for creating my own songs. I loaded both the
MoPhatt and XL7 ROMs as well as the Proteus 2500 ROM. I have found the
patterns for the MP7 and XL7 but have not found anything on the E-mu site or
on the web about the Proteus 2500 patterns. I was wondering if anyone had
these patterns in a standard format SMF and would like to share them.

By the way anyone interested in trading a Proteus 2500 for an MP7 let me
know, I have another MP7 as a backup but was considering the 2500 for rack
and space issues.

Re: Welcome New Members

2008-07-06 by zielvis

Hello Everybody,

I'm not really an owner yet, I'm waiting for my XL-7 to arrive but I
already make plans what to use it for.

I am a guitarist and play a traditional rock'n'roll live with a four
piece band and at the same time make electronic music at home. I used
to use synths, samplers and sequencers a few years ago but I sold them
all and now I use only a laptop. Recently I decided to try to put the
two worlds together: I want to be able to perform live alone, playing
my beloved classic rock'n'roll tunes with a guitar and XL-7.

I'm not sure if this Elvis-meets-techno hybrid will work but even if
not, I will happily incorporate E-mu in my laptop productions.

I'd like to ask You a question for the beginning: is it possible to
program Control Change messages along with all the musical data in a
song and route them (only them) to one of MIDI outs to change patches
in my AdrenaLinn guitar FX? What I'm thinking of is a fully automatic,
synched to tempo guitar-groovebox setup. When there's a time in a song
to change from clean sound to distorted, it gets done with a command
sent from XL-7 and I don't have to do anything manually (well,
foot-ally in fact;)

Does it makes sense?

Thanks in advance and best regards,

Marcin

Thanks! What a great group this is. Not only do we have one of the
most interactive tools (xl7/mp7) for making music, we also have a real
group with folks like Aaron and Steve and a whole host of others
responding to questions and issues. I have a LOT of kit in my cramped
studio, but the trusty XL7 is one that I turn to over and over again.
OK I'll stop now - just wanted to say thnks for the effort, you guys
make a great instrument even better!

Re: [xl7] Ideas for Live sessions with XL-7

2008-07-07 by Aaron Eppolito

A compressor is good, but with electronic drums, they're not as necessary. With an acoustic kit, timbral change is synonymous with hitting it harder, something that also results in more volume. With a synth, you can reduce the amount that velocity controls amplitude, leaving the effect on filters and multisampling intact. This lets you get dynamic variation without the corresponding volume variation. This is, in effect, the same thing a compressor does on real drums.

The second question - are you trying to play different songs or different patterns? Pattern mode is more suited to playing live. Song mode is more where you'd arrange the track to record in your studio. Playing the patterns live is what makes a sequenced performance more than just playback (my opinion showing through here!) I'd get familiar with the following functions: Mute Hold and XMix. If you set up your patterns in such a way that you have similar things on similar tracks, using mute hold will let you change from one pattern to another while retaining the current level of "orchestration". Conversely, if you are jamming on a particular tune, using the mutes as realtime arranging tools are their main purpose. You could even copy the pattern to different locations and name them "Rockin' - bridge", "Rockin' - chorus", etc. Set up different mutes on each section (or even change the patterns slightly) and then you can switch to those sections
 automatically on the pattern boundary.

XMix you could use in a more advanced fashion to morph one sequence into another. If you've got tunes that can intermingle, you can swap individual tracks out on the fly. Doing this, you can effectively change songs one track at a time. Good for trance, house, and probably lots of other electronica genres. Once you've switched "enough" of the tracks, you can always swap the whole song in by changing patterns (again, still nicely synced to the pattern boundary). Note that tempo will stay constant around the pattern switch, so if you're not at the right tempo, you can use the tap tempo button to get yourself slowly into the correct groove (without making your crowd trip from an abrupt tempo change).

Good luck!

Yep, you can send program changes to any and all 32 external MIDI channels (16 on each port) individually and simultaneously. You can do this on the unit itself, or by dumping in sequences in standard MIDI format from a computer sequencer. You might even make a pattern for each section of the song, complete with program changes and any other repeated notes/events and chain them up in song mode. This would let you very easily say "Play the intro for 8 bars, play the verse for 32, bridge for 4, chorus for 8, etc" and as long as you have the program change set up in the pattern, no matter where you reorder the song, you'll get the right effects.

Re: [xl7] Ideas for Live sessions with XL-7

2008-07-08 by Mauricio Balma

Those are excellent tips for playing live.

BTW, I produce music exclusively for the dance scene, I'm a stage performer.

I use two command stations on stage. The main one, a XL7 with three ROMS, is controlling an Access Virus TI and a Roland V synth.

The second one is controlling a Waldorf Micro Q and a Prophet 8.

I couldn't perform as I do without my priceless command stations.

Obviously, I use PATTERN mode.

You know, the concept of the pattern organization on the command station, is 8 banks of 128 patterns each one.

What I do, is:

Record a 4 bars length pattern for very rythmical or percussive patterns.
Record a 8 or 16 bars lenth pattern for more harmonic patterns, because is better to have more time to more complex constructions with long notes like pad development.

Generaly, I start on Bank 0. But I have two directions to follow when advancing from one pattern to pattern. If I'm playing the pattern 056-0, the next pattern will be obvioulsly on the 057-0 location. Follow a sequential mode.
But sometimes, I need to have a second version of that pattern, but with small differences, and a bridge at the last 1 or two measures. Add some knob movements, a little bit of swing effect, to make it not so repetitive.
That second version of the pattern 056-0, won't be stored on the position 057-0, but on the position 056-1. So, if I want a direct and drastic transition from the patttern 56 to the 57, I just go there, but If I want to make the transition with a bridge at the end of the pattern, I go to the second version of the pattern "UP", going to the 056-1 position, and then, returning to the 0 Bank to the pattern 057-0 to continue the sequence.

Another tip is to record on a SINGLE track (I use the first one 1 or the last one 16) a MULTIa track, with only knob movement or controller information. So, I play the pattern, and when it loops, I activate the multi track, and it will transform the pattern into something else. useful to avoid repetitive music, or to also create bridge transitions.

My command stations handle a lot of EXT information, since they sequence other synths with A and B outputs.
sometimes, when its too much, I COMPRESS several tracks into a single Multi A or Multi B tracks, taking care of the polyphony. When I have poly problems, I reduce:
-Delay time
-Chorus on patches
-Start time and gatetime of the patches.
-Thin control change data

I'm absolutely a NEWBIE with compression effect. Modern dance music uses a lot of complession. I'm stuck there.

Also, sometimes when I use too much sounds, some of them goes into the same range frequency and the overall mix becomes muddy.

I need to solve that problem with the sub out puts of my synths. And trying to avoid to have several sounds of the same frequency range, playing at the same time.

but I need help on that. Does basses have to go on the same SUB OUTPUT?? or sending the kick on one sub, and the bass on the other one?

Thanks

 Balma

The Files section (Command Station Data folder) has the P2500 demo
patterns and songs in a zip file. You may also be interested in the
Proteus 2000 Presets converted for use in the 2500 (By Sean @ E-mu).
If they are not there already, I will upload them.

Standard warning: these things will overwrite what you have in your
E-Mu, so make sure you have backed up everything you don't want to
lose.

Command stations, the emu rack modules, roms, studio and live use here is a very basic overview as i said it is in its early development stage.

I am happy to see less spam and more people starting to talk. I actually have been building a forum over the last couple weeks called Command-Nation and will post links to it soon so if anyone wants to join they are free to. I will also be looking for 1 mod to help with things there.

Thanks

 Balma

If you set up your patterns in such a way that you have similar things on similar tracks, using mute hold will let you change from one pattern to another while retaining the current level of "orchestration" .

Good luck!

-Aaron

those are both great! i'm not sure if i'd use the first trick, but it's
great nonetheless.

right now my studio is in limbo, so i haven't been doing anything useful
with my toys... but using the buttons on a PC-1600x i can have different
patterns assigned to different buttons. this makes the UI somewhat more
like an RM1x (which gave me the idea to do it on my XL7), and i won't have
to fight with the data-wheel on a dark stage -
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/xl7/message/19276

some day aaron will reveal the secret sysex code for un/muting tracks
(nudge nudge, hint hint) and then i'll also be able to un/mute tracks with
a remote button on the far end of a midi cable. the real reason i want to
be able to do that via midi is to have variations on, say, a percussion
sound that's isolated on track 'x'. i can program a variation on track
'y'. then using a midi button i'd be able to simultaneously mute track x
and unmute track y, or the other way around. the other way to do this
would require two copies of an otherwise identical pattern, so this saves
memory. it would also allow seamless switching anywhere within a looping
pattern. i suppose it would be possible to also do this with x-mix, but it
seems cumbersome.

so aaron.... any info you can send me, even if it's just some code and
some implementation notes (on or off list) about muting tracks via sysex
would be much appreciated, and i'd be happy to post a polished version to
the list after i get it debugged and optimized (like i did with the
pattern change sysex). the sysex for x-mix would also be useful, and i'm
sure that would facilitate some ~nice~ tricks.... is there a hidden mode
that makes the command stations output sysex in real-time? that would be
~so~ useful to "capture" and reverse engineer all of the undocumented
sysex that i need to make some of these tricks happen...
