USB problems w/ XP

USB problems w/ XP

2008-06-27 by dwn4tupac

I've been trying all day to get the xl7 installed w/ usb support to no
avail. XP automatically "installs" the xl7 when I plug it in via usb
but when I go to device manager it is listed as an unknown device.
When i go to the properties of the unknown device it says that no
drivers are installed, so I click update drivers and select the ones
on cd but then windows tells me that the drivers are not as good as
the ones already installed!!!
Dammit the properties told me there were no drivers installed!!

WTF!!

Anyone else have this problem?
I've tried getting windows to not recognize and auto install the
machine but no luck.

Re: USB problems w/ XP

Although I had success with Win98 and E-Mu's USB, I was never able to
get it to work with XP, despite numerous attempts. I even tried some
tricks to fool the usb enumerator, unfortunately without success.

This issue has been raised several times of the years. I believe there
was one person who had a suggestion that I never got to try. I believe
it involved resetting a specific chip manufaturer's settings.

Some users report success with setting up E-Mu's usb drivers with XP.

I will try searching the archives to see if I can post links to those
threads.

Here's the link to the possible solution I was remembering. I am not
sure if it will help as I never followed through. I suggest you read
the thread to get the full discussion.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/xl7/message/17496

Let us know if you follow through and if it solves the problem.

i'd still like to see a more OS-agnostic approach to transferring files
between a xx7 and a computer... the xx7 should support a "dumb" mode where
it acts like a flash drive. the computer can then open folders such as
"patch_data", "songs", "loops", etc and just drag-n-drop and rename files
as needed.

that would also solve my problem of getting my XL7 to talk to a BSD box.

maybe in OS3...?

Download and install the E-Loader 1.1 downloadable from E-mu's website.

Restart the machine without the XL-7 connected. Once you are in
Windows and it has stopped doing all of that crapola it does at the
start (listen for your disk to stop churning), then and only then plug
in the XL-7's USB cable. Allow it to automatically detect the driver
and it will do so.

Now, this may be what you're doing, but I've done this three times on
three different systems and it has worked exactly the same way on all
three. I think you'll have problems if you try to manually tell it
what to do instead of doing it E-mu's way.

By the way, I find the USB port to be a waste - only used for faster
sequence uploads and downloads. Yee howdy. It would have been nice to
at least have it show up as a MIDI interface on the computer's end for
the MIDI ports, and also the XX-7's internal channels. One of those
things that was probably planned but they never got a chance to get
around to it.

I actually tried doing it exactly like it says in the
manual/instructions, but it always auto recognizes regardless.
I really don't care about xfer speeds, but I want to be able to take
patterns off of the xl7 for backup purposes and no matter what I try
w/ the regular midi cables I can't take patterns off the xl7 and save
them to the pc. I right click them in the eloader and select the save
to disk or whatever then a box comes up that tells me it can't....grrr.
So i figured if I got usb working then downloading would work
too...but now I've got a whole usb problem to deal with.

It should work with midi transfer (although at 1/100th the speed).

Diagnostic question:
When you select "Scan for MIDI devices" from e-loader's MIDI menu,
does your e-mu show up in the dialogue box? If not, check the MIDI I/O
port settings in midi setup. If your e-mu is listed, make sure the
midi setup has the same sysex ID as what's listed in the Device
Inquiry box.

Hope this helps.

yes I have no problems sending midi to the xl-7 and it is recognized
when i plug it in via midi, but i can't get any patterns out of the
machine onto the pc.

also does the usb allow for the xfer of midi clock?
I really hope so because I have a laptop w/ no midi in/out

Re: USB problems w/ XP

If you have a complete midi loop between your computer (using e-
loader) and your xl-7 (and the sysex ID is correctly listed in the
set up), are your patterns xl-7 patterns listed in thr bank browser?

If so, select whichever patterns you want to save, right click and
choose "get selected sequences. Then navigate to the folder where
you want to save the patterns.

If your patterns are not listed, and you are sure your e-loader
settings are correct (both ports and sysex ID), try pressing
refresh. As soon as you do, both the green and red leds (midi out
and in leds) on the xl-7 should flash one and off very rapidly for
about 3 seconds.

If they don't, what does it say in slot 0 of the e-loader bank
browser? If it says <not received> and slots 1 - 127 say <no name
loaded> then you do not have e-loader and the xl-7 set up to
communicate with each other via midi system exclusive commands for
some reason.

Is there any device in your system that might be filtering out the
sysex commands? This is important because because the pattern dumps
use sysex to transfer the songs via midi.

Hope this helps.

As for the e-mu's usb port, you cannot use that as a substitute for
midi. You either need a midi interface or a device such as a usb
keyboard that has a selectable midi port.

PS: e-loader uses Sun's java. I mention this in case that might be the
source of the problem. When you run e-loader, check the Message
Console (under the Window menu) to see if there are any signs of
problems with java. (This is a long-shot, but who knows. If you have a
probper midi loop, if all settings are correct, and nothing is
filtering out sysex commands, its worth taking a peek.)

I told you already that I get to this point and click save and another
box pops up telling me that it can't save the midi file to disk...no
explanation is given.

My patterns are all listed in the eloader librarian. I have no
problems putting midi files on to the xl7. Just taking them off
doesn't work.

It says the name of pattern 1 in bank 0 (currently underworld-born slippy

Only possibly the xl-7 itself.

First of all greetings to all here! I've been waiting to ask the same
question and have the exact same problem with XP. I can see all the
sequences and songs in E-loader but when I try to upload a sequence or
song to my pc it says it can't do it with a red stop sign! No
explanation. Also, in the MIDI setup window the only way E-loader will
bring up the XL-7's sequences is when the Sysex device ID is set to 1
but the actual device ID numbers are 0. If I change the number to 0 to
match the device numbers it won't even read the XL-7! This is
supposedly a key point that the numbers should match so I'm lost.

Since I will only be connecting my XL-7 to my XP PC for sequence
backup/restore you guys say that I can do that with just a MIDI I/O
connection and no USB? That would take a load off my mind. Cheers!

Your OS is fine. They're checksummed on download. If it runs at all, it's fine.

Just to make sure then can I still backup/restore sequence data using

Re: [xl7] Re: USB problems w/ XP

2008-07-07 by Aaron Eppolito

Yes, USB only makes things faster. One tip that has helped folks from the past was to connect to a USB 1.1 hub instead of a port that supports 2.0. If all else fails, that's always something to try. I should really try setting this up with my unit at home. I have all my sequences on there that aren't anywhere else. Maybe I'll have the same problems and can help sort them out.

Just to make sure then can I still backup/restore sequence data using
only a MIDI I/O connection on Windows XP without the USB?
