Random velocity/volume fluctuations

Random velocity/volume fluctuations

2008-06-22 by d.szep

Hi guys, new here, just picked up an xl7 about a month ago, been
learning a lot and enjoying it until recently and I hope someone can
help me out.

The volume fluctuates without reason. I can take an empty sequence,
set it to 1 bar, play a straight kick drum all at same velocity and
when i play it back the volume is all over the place, like an lfo is
modulating it. no midi devices are connecting. its just running
straight into the mixer and out the speakers, i've checked the cables,
mixer, interface, everything.

it hasn't always done this, i feel like i've checked every possible
reason other than a hardware malfunction. please tell me thats not it.

thanks for reading.

have you tried deleting all the events on all the tracks?
If a previous owner had midi on there and then recorded knob events
over it even if the midi was later deleted, the knob events might
still remain...
when you push the pattern button and then hit play does the lcd show
the velocity changing realtime?

Thanks for your reply, Yes, these are emtpy sequences, so they don't
have any knob data but I did delete all controller data anyway to
check. This happens even with inputting notes by grid recording.
even with the velocity at max the volume still fluctuates. There is
no visual change of velocity on the screen either. I cant even call
the changes random as it seems to be 2.5 bars input volume then a
couple bars with a spike in volume. I haven't checked every present
but it appears this is only happening with drums.

Re: Random velocity/volume fluctuations

definitely wierd...
Since everything is empty anyway maybe you should try re-installing
the OS. Are you using ver. 2.0?
Anyone else having stability problems or wierd glitches like this?
I've read reviews where owners claim to have no stability /
reliability problems, but after only a month w/ mine I've had tons of
bad crashes. I think it might be corrupted midi files, but as of
right now I don't think I'll try performing live w/ the xl 7 w/out
wiping the patterns and re-installing the OS first.

Emu really dropped the ball when they failed to include one of those
"restore to factory settings" options, although after studying the
architecture, I kind of understand why they didn't.

Yea, I am confident I ruled out any "idiot" reasons for this, but I
hope I'm wrong. I'll be rewiring my setup later in the week so maybe
that will find something. - I'm running os2.0, I was looking for a
factory reset, guess there isn't one?

Other than this I have had no stability problems whatsoever.

Um, restore factory multisetup wasn't doin' it for you? There's also two reinitialize options in the service menu that resets everything in the box - one that deletes all sogs and patterns and one that leaves the sequences intact. Note, however, that there's no way to restore the factory songs and patterns without redownloading them via ELoader.

There's plenty of things that affect volume. Try a factory preset, or a different factory preset (i.e. not one of the user presets). Try erasing all events on the track (if you have 2.0, the shortcut is to hold the erase button and press the track button for the track you'd like to delete). You could twiddle the main volume knob in the event that it's got a dirty contact (unlikely). Check your master effects. Try putting the drums on a different track to see if that makes a difference.

Also, make sure the preset you are using is not program for these fluctuations....it is actually easy to program using the modulation matrix and is sometimes a desired effect to "humanize" a drum preset....it can also be created with a slow/S&H phase summing effect such as phase shifter that sums a phase/time shifted version of the signal with the original....this will give the sonic appearance of a fluctuations in amplitude at each beat....

thank you all for your help, I did a reset also and still the same
affect. the best way to describe it is like random accents on the
sound. it happens regardless of track/drum present etc. at this
point i cant see how it could be any sort of intentional modulation
making the accents. although i plugged and plugged again, through
different mixers, etc, i think it was some sort of bleed in my cables
or mixer, which was not present before, but after several switches it
seems to be gone :D
