Hi Gord
Dont spray it down the sides of the shaft.
You will brake down the grease that make it smooth to turn.
Have a look at this photo (if the link works.. its in the root of the 
photos section)

Look where the arrows are, thats were you spray.
You dont need vey much, in fact if you apply full pressure on the 
nozzle even for 1/2 second that will be way too much!
You dont really want to cover anything else in Deoxit as its a waste 
and its expensive! Also you will degrease the shaft. 
If you do mop it up with some toilet roll or the like.
