Hung Notes

Hung Notes

2006-04-27 by Alien

I'm curently reexpereinceing a problem with the Command Station that I
had undergone in the past but been able to alleviate to a certain degree.

In any regard, what is occuring is occassionally a note that was
played on the Command Station will get hung and continue to sound even
after all pads have been released/keys on a controller have been
released. It just about always one note....so one can be playing
chords, and it will not be the entire an entire chord that gets hung,
simply one of the notes from a chord that was played.

Does anyone know how to alleviate this problem for good.

Regards,

     Al

Did you try a different midi controller? Sounds like the controller is not sending note off command.

i used to get this same problem myself..

and it would happen with the onboard pads as well as external midi devices.

sending another note-on, note-off pair for that note would fix it..
but this is one my 1.01 XL7, so im not sure if it goes away in later
OS versions...

Re: Hung Notes

2006-04-28 by Alien

Much as Alwyn noted, this probelm occurs not only when I'm using one
of my external controllers, but also if I'm playing the Command
Station directly from it's own pads. Unlike Alwyn, I'm am running OS
version 2.0

Further, as with Alwyn, the means by which the problem is resolved is
by figuring out which specific note is hung and retriggering it.

Re: [xl7] Re: Hung Notes

2006-04-28 by Alwyn

a few thoughts on it..

from memory, i've never had it happen when i was just playing, ie, i
didn't have the sequencer running. however, it would continue on
after i'd pressed stop.

it wouldn't occour in tracks that were sequenced. ie, the hung
notes have to be caused by someone playing something

now, the next question is, does it happen when you're playing a patch
in a track that has both sequenced stuff and human stuff being played
to it. ie, you've selected track 10, you have a sequenced loop for
it.. you have the sequencer running and you're playing your controller
as well.. so that stuff is going into track 10 too....

cheers,

Re: Hung Notes

2006-04-29 by Alien

Further like Alwyn, this problem never occurs when the sequencer is
playing.

And call it a hunch, but I really don't think what I'm experiencing is
a machine specific issue.

Interestingly though, as I had noted earlier, this is a problem I
thought I had gotten rid off (it hasn't popped up in ages). This
problem occured while I was working on a timbre I had been
developing....and there were a couple unique things that began to
happen in regard to the hung notes that I noticed since my initial
posting:

A. The notes definately at times were not notes I had ever hit. And
unlike with my past hung note issues, were at times in deed
more than one note at a time.

B. They would fade in VERY slowly over time but eventually become
quite loud. Retriggering the note(s) would get rid of the note(s)
however in searching for the correct note(s), one risked triggering
more hung notes.

C. IT WAS PATCH SPECIFIC! Soon as I jumped over to any of my other
patches and began playing them, ALL WAS WELL! Further, the hung note
problem also was able to be resolved by selecting ANY of my other
patches, and simply running through the keys on them.

At present, though I really don't want to get rid of the patch that is
causing the problem, I'm going to be doing so. What makes me nervous
though is that I don't know what it is about that patch that is
driving the CS nuts......and thus there is a chance of running into
the problem again.

Regards,

     Al

IIRC, i actually only ever had the problem when the sequencer _was_ running.
I'm not sure about it not happening when the sequencer wasn't running,
I do definatly know that it has happened when i had the sequencer
running though

I've never personally had this.

A thought on this. does changing the patch on the XL7 send an "All
notes off" midi message?

Is your patch very busy? as in, lots of control signal routing and
different layers?
perhaps the processor is dropping midi message "packets" due to being
overloaded??

Have you verified you do not have a midi loop in your setup, feeding output midi data from the XL7 eventually back to it's own input ?

I'll confess that the patch is fairly complex. Now it only has 4
layers, but there is a fair amount of signal routing and such going on.

I would hope that at best that what your describing here would be the
issue as this would mean that it's not a problem I would need to worry
about much. Now on the other end, what bothers me is that simply
bypassing this patch wouldn't do much as the possibility would lie
that I may sometime in the future retrigger whatever the problem whas
during development of another patch.
