XL7 S/PDIF -> iBook

XL7 S/PDIF -> iBook

2005-11-07 by Ronald Pieket

Hi group-

I was wondering if there is a (simple) way to record the XL7 digital
audio on my iBook.

I've been looking for an S/PDIF(coax)-to-USB converter, bus powered,
and found none. I found the Edirol UA-1EX, which is almost perfect,
except that it is for optical S/PDIF. I'm hopeful that a coax version
is at least technologically possible.

What is the simplest way to get digital audio from my XL7 into my
iBook? I greatly prefer a low-clutter solution. A simple USB powered
thingamajig would be greatly preferred over a general purpose
multifunctional digital audio interface.

Does anybody know of such a thingamajig?

Hi
I think you can get either connection, ether the coxial or optical
varities of the same box. Ive definetly seen them around.
I thought i saw an edirol with coxial, maybe creative make one as it
goes.
As for being possible, its exactly the same signal but transmission
is light with fiber optic and electrical with coxial.
Ive got some cheap convertors that go both ways here from maplin. You
need to give them power though which is a bit of a pain.

Thanks Gonz.

But where?

It appears that Edirol have completely given up on coax. All five
Edirol digital audio interfaces that are currently in production sport
optical S/PDIF only.

But I was hoping for a simpler, smaller, less hassle solution. The XL7
has a digital audio output (S/PDIF coax), and my iBook has a digital
input (USB and Firewire). The challenge: connect one to the other with
the least amount of hardware.

Hi Ron, Here's a link to musiciansfriend webpage that may be what your looking for?
(hope the link works)

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=rec/search/detail/base_pid/709200/

It's an M-Audio unit that's firewire and has coaxial s/pdif connections. Here's the product
description: M-Audio FireWire Audiophile Computer Recording Interface
Product #709200. It looks like this thing has more bells and whistles than what your
looking for, but it's a start, I guess.

I own a powerbook and I've recorded directly into the computer using a 1/4"-1/8" stereo
cable. I'd connect it to the headphone jack of my px-7 and record directly into the Garage
Band app. Even though it's analog, the signal was extremely clean.

Thanks Mike. Yeah, that is much more than I need. But I think I found
the perfect solution:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5825728320

It's an Edirol UA-1D. Looks like what I had in mind exactly. A cable
with a lump in it. It is out of production, so I turned to eBay.
Problem solved for $33 + shipping.

Of course your headphone jack solution is cheaper, but I have a
(minor) hum on the headphone out, and I have to watch out for clipping
and stuff like that.
