Emu XL-7 & MP-7 User's Group

upon looking in my emu I saw an open space for a (seemingly) square 
memory chip - does someone know exactly what this is and does - where 
can one obtain it ?

It provides a way to update the OS without downloading it via MIDI.  It
is used on the factory floor to put the OS on the unit for the first
time.  It does nothing for you (unless you hose your machine so bad it
can't even find the bootloader.)
