FX Routing Tip

FX Routing Tip

I wrote this for our newsletter. This might help some of you better
understand the routing capabilities for your XX-7.

Routing effects with your XL-7 or MP-7.

There are two effects processors, FX A and FX B in the XL-7 and MP-7. FX
A is primarily used for reverbs and FX B is used primarily for delays
and chorus effects. There are Four Stereo Busses in which FX A and FX B
can be routed to (Send 1-4). Press the Global button and go to the 12th
Screen , entitled "FX A send amount". This is were you assign the
effects amount (in percentages) for each of the 4 Busses

Setting them up
I usually start with a basic formula. Since FX A is usually a reverb, I
map my busses in the following way.
Send 1 = 5%
Send 2 = 25%
Send 3 = 10%
Send 4 = 15%
This will give me the ability to send a Kick drum Preset that I want
very little reverb to send 1 and a snare Preset that I want a lot of
reverb to send 2.

FX B (15th screen in Global) has the same choices. My starting set up is
the following
Send 1 = 0%
Send 2 = 0%
Send 3 = 10%
Send 4 = 25%

Since I Usually use FX B for synced delays, by leaving Send 1 and 2 dry
this allows me to rout my drum presets, basses and pads to send 1 and 2
with out delay. Buss 3 and 4 can be used for leads and other things I
want to have bouncing around.

Lastly, now go to the 7th screen while in Global, "MIX OUTPUT". This is
were you rout MIDI channel 01A-16B to a particular buss (send 1-4). All
of the above information is saved on a per pattern basis. So with a
quick switch from pattern to pattern you can dramatically change the
routing and buss amounts of your effects setups. Routing is done on a
per MIDI channel basis. Factory patterns and empty patterns default to a
Track 1 = MIDI channel 1, 2 to 2, etc. setup. This default will help
keep things clean and easy when using effects, especially when your just
starting off. If you start changing your tracks channels or start
merging tracks, remember, routing is based on MIDI channel not Track.

The essentials
* Effects Parameters for your patterns are all found in Global , screen 7-15.
* Send amounts, Mix output, FX A type and FX B type are all saved per pattern.
* You can rout individual layers within a Preset to separate busses.
Press Preset edit, press button 10 (Bend/Output) once or twice until you
get to "MIX OUTPUT". If your Preset is on MIDI channel 1, now go to
Global and assign you MIX OUTPUT for channel 1 to "use Preset'.
* If your using individual outputs (sub 2 for example), while in MIX
OUPUT your screen will say Send 3->sub 2. Any Preset assigned to this
buss will have its signal routed to sub 2 (jacks on the back of your
CS). Effects can only be routed to the Main outputs. Once a jack is
plugged into the physical jack, it now in effect becomes a dry signal path.
