XL-7 synched to computer

XL-7 synched to computer

2005-09-17 by R Raithel

I'm trying to control the on/off and tempo of the XL-7
with Sonar 4. Basicaslly what I'm trying to do is
write drum patterns with the XL-7 and then record them
into Sonar using the tempo setting in Sonar and having
the drum sequence start and stop at zero in Sonar.
I'm getting MIDI note information from the computer to
XL-7 with no problem.
I hope I'm making sense...
Thanks for any help,
Robert Raithel

maybe I am missing the point here, but if what you want to do is write
patterns on the XL and then get them into Sonar, why not just write
the pattern and dump it to a midi file using the E-loader utility?
Then when you open the midi file in Sonar, just make sure it starts at
the first tick......
hope that helps a bit.

Re: XL-7 synched to computer ( Sonar <==>E-Mu sync )

I agree. Use e-loader to do this!!! No need to mess with syncing the
two for this task. With e-loader, you can select several sequences
at once to download. You can choose to save them in your Sonar
directory instead of the default e-loader directory.

HOWEVER:

If you want to sync the two for another reason, you can do that
later--after you use eloader to get the drum patterns into Sonar.
You will have to set one up as master and the other as slave.

In the E-Mu (OS2.0) the MIDI menu system has three important clock
menus: (1) BASE TEMPO, (2) TRANSMIT MIDI CLOCK, and (3) EXTERNAL
SONG START/STOP (among other important midi options).

If you want to sync the E-Mu to Sonar just as a sound module:
Set BASE TEMPO to 0 (0=external clock)
Set TRANSMIT MIDI CLOCK to off
Set EXTERNAL SONG START/STOP to ignored.

If you want to sync the E-Mu to Sonar and have the E-Mu sequencer
play along with Sonar:
Set BASE TEMPO to 0 (0=external clock)
Set TRANSMIT MIDI CLOCK to off
Set EXTERNAL SONG START/STOP to accepted.

For both of these make sure Sonar is sending midi clock. I am not
sure if Sonar 4 is the same as Sonar 3, but in case it is here's the
Sonar setup:

Select Options | Project | Clock tab
Select Source = internal
Select Options | Project | Sync tab
Select Transmit Midi Start/Continue/Stop/Clock

If you want to sync Sonar [slave] to the E-Mu [master], you can do
that. Set the E-mu to send clock. Set Sonar options accordingly.
Also look in Options | Global | Timecode tab. You probably will not
have to change anything there, but I mention it just in case you
really get into doing fancy things with MTC or MIDI Sync--later on
down the road.

MAKE SURE YOU DON'T HAVE A MIDI CLOCK FEEDBACK LOOP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hope this helps you get the most out of Sonar and your XL-7. But
really, for getting the drum patterns into Sonar, use e-loader.

PS: If at some time you want to record E-Mu arps or riffs into
Sonar, you can do that with the E-Mu as master. Check the Tips and
Tricks files and the archives for how to do this.

Footnote: The E-Mu sequencer DOES support SPP (Song Position Pointer)
in case you are using Sonar as your master and you have tracks in your
E-Mu sequencer that are tracking Sonar.

Enable SPP in Sonar.
Make sure E-Mu is accepting start and stop.

Thank you! This is exactly what I am trying to do.
Don't know if it will work as I have an earlier OS in
XL-7, but it looks promising.
Again, thanks! You've been a tremendous help!

PS. Where does one get e-loader? As you can probably
tell, I'm brand-new to the XL-7.
