Re: Searching for OS......

Re: Searching for OS......

2005-08-31 by OutLaw1387@aol.com

My MP7 crashed repeated yesterday about 5-10 times..Just stalling.. Now it
sits at a screen on boot up that says "Searching of OS...." Is there anything I
can do apart from sending it back to EPR? No other plugs are plugged in
besides the power cable. Has this thing fried, died, and I should lay it to the
side?

Thanks in Advance

I am certainly nop expert on this...but it sounds like the OS is corrupted.
Searching for OS is what the machine says when you start it with the enter
button pressed down; perhaps that button is stuck in the down position.
Perhaps others with more knowledge can tell you if it would help to
reinstall the OS best wishes for you and your machine; when they act up
it is a bother

thank you, I greatly appreciate your time and effort..I'll check the enter
button and see if someone can give me the instructions for reinstalling to OS,
or whatever ideas may come along. At this point Im willing to try open heart
surgery, lol

Hook it up to E-loader and redownload the OS. You might want to check
the internal connections too if you're familiar with electronics to
prevent future crashing...

Thanks. However it won't go past the loading OS screen to allow the os to be
transferred back on. Any ideas as to what Im supposed to look for or do
internally? I'm familiar with internal working of gadgets but some direction or
instruction would surely be helpful.

It won't go past the loading screen till you hook it up to a PC or OS9
mac running eloader via bi-directional MIDI, select an OS to download,
and start downloading. If you've already done this properly, let's
talk. The E-Loader manual should detail how to set the connections up.

Thanks but I have tried to this no avail.. The mp7 still sits at searching
for OS.. and since it will not move past this screen I can't reflash the OS. If
I try to flash it while it sits at that screen I receive a midi
communications error. A valid update request has not been received from the selected
device..

and in the end the unit says Error! Code=001 Fatal: Bad Instruction..Thanks for
the help but I think this puppy needs a new flash chip.

have you tried the command prep in advance to installing OS 2.0?

no OS at all would be a version pre 1.17 in my opinion as well..

good luck

Re: [xl7] Re: Searching for OS......

Yeah, sounds bad. It's probably either the flash chip or memory chip,
or the connections to them. I've heard of pins lifting off the pads
after time. Maybe someone with QFP soldering chops could help you...

PS. I *wouldn't* run flash prep. There are two "levels" of operating
system in the XL-7. One is what's called a boot loader, the other is
the OS proper. Flash prep updates the boot loader. That thing is
responsible for finding an OS to run, either on flash, in memory, or
loading it via MIDI. If you mess up the boot loader, you're hosed for
good (without reflashing from a ROM image). If you mess up the OS,
there's always reloading.
