problems with preset upload

problems with preset upload

2005-08-16 by eriksatie01

hi, I've spent my night trying to upload to my xl7 the preset
extension from rob papen for the techno yard rom.
I've chosen the file for rom without demo song (I don't find any demo
on mine), I've loaded the midi file into cubase and play throught the
midi out of my evolution controller (don't have any other midi interface)
midi in was flashing on the xl7. at end I've found all the preset in
the correct user bank, but lots of them sound the same, a sort of pad
with an LFO on the pitch! I've checked how they are programmed and the
"bad" sounds have layers with xl7 rom instruments, or they don't have
instruments at all...
other preset are better, but I cannot assure they are how they should
be...
then I've tried with midi-ox with different transfer speed and buffer
size but no luck.
then I've tried to upload the bank from emu site "xl1 patch for xl7"
and I have the same kind of problem.
what I'm doing wrong?
maybe is the midi out of my evolution keyboard? for everyday
sequencing work it has always been ok.
some suggestion please! don't want to pass another night in the same
way...

hmmm interesting
im sure that if you have a fancy evolution keyboaf you have an extra
usb cable layin around hehe :)

if so try that with e-loader.
good luck

Except that USB and E-loader only does sequences, not presets.
Actually, E-loader doesn't do presets at all.

Try playing the MIDI file slower. It seems that the presets that are
bad are ones that transmitted badly. The XL-7 needs a significant
amount of time to digest sysex, so if it's too fast, it will choke,
causing information to get lost. If you can, slow the tempo down in
Cubase, as that will cause more time to elapse between messages.

Re: problems with preset upload

2005-08-17 by eriksatie01

sorry for not answering, I had a problem with my mail.
I've tried to slow down but when it starts to play the file, cubase go
back to 120 bpm... maybe there is some kind of command in the midi
file to be played at that speed...
that's way I tried with midiOX, but with no succes. Someone can tell
me how to set the various speed parameter in midiox? I mean buffer
size, delay...
the strange about it is that the bad preset sounds all the same! has
the xl7 a "default" instrument that is loaded in case it cannot find
the right one? i cannot listen to it anymore, it gives me headhake...
my evolution keyboard has only a midi out, so the xl7 cannot
comunicate with my pc. does it matter?

Re: problems with preset upload

2005-08-18 by steve_the_composer

A few years ago I tested using Windows media player (Win98SE) for
sending sysex data to gear. This worked when the sysexdata
was "captured" as a sequence [that is, the sysex was recorded realtime
in a running sequencer that captures sysex in banks].

(If that doesn't make sense, I apologize--I am tired. WIll try again
another day.)

Try and find the tempo event in the sequence and edit it down to 60 or
so. That should solve it.

ok I will try when I will come back to my xl7 :)
BTW I saw that sysex command can be in the form of stand alone file or
embedded in midi file? which is the difference? I upload then in a
different way? thx

Re: problems with preset upload

2005-09-19 by eriksatie01

Yesterday I had tried again to upload the preset for Techno rom from
Rob Papen site. I've slowed the tempo down in cubase to 60 bpm, the
upload went slighltly better than before but I still have bugged
presets.
so I went down to 20 bpm and my xl7 has gon crazy: in the middle of
the midi dump, the xl7 begun to play the demo song, without pressing
any button, and I had to power it down to stop it (!!)
what can I do? could be the midi interface?
please help me, it is important for me to solve this problem because
in the future I will surely have to back up and restore my presets.

bye

Re: problems with preset upload

2005-09-19 by steve_the_composer

(1) Are the presets in sysex format (syx file) or sysex embedded in
a standard midi file?
(2) Does Cubase have an parameters for controlling how sysex banks
are sent?
(3) Does Cubase let you see the times at which sysex banks are sent
(either in measures or discrete time)?
(4) Can you upload a printout of the times and sysex banks?
(5) Does Cubase have a manual in pdf format?

Unless Cubase has problems handling sysex, or unless your e-mu/midi
setup is causing the problem, you shouldn't have the problems you
describe.

The presets are in a standard midi file

for midi files, I think there are no parameters

I have open the file with midi list in cubase, and there you can see
all the midi events and edit them. I think you can also see the time,
but I have to check, now I'm at work :)

I'll try

don't remember if it is in pdf or html

I've also tried with midiox but with the same results. I've tried
different timing configurations without succes.
togheter with the .mid files there is txt that explains how to use
the files. it simply says: load the midi file in your sequencer and
play it. nothing more

Re: problems with preset upload

2005-09-20 by eriksatie01

some more informations:
2) there are no parameters for controlling how sysex banks are sent
3) yes you can see the times at which sysex are sent
4) cannot printout it but I write down the first ones, the others
follow with the same time:

 SysEx 1.01.01.000
 SysEx 1.01.01.060
 SysEx 1.01.02.070
 SysEx 1.01.03.080
 SysEx 1.01.04.090
 SysEx 1.02.01.100

or, in seconds:

 SysEx 00.00.00.000
 SysEx 00.00.00.063
 SysEx 00.00.00.198
 SysEx 00.00.00.333
 SysEx 00.00.00.469
 SysEx 00.00.00.604

the time in second is true for bpm fixed to 120

5) the manual is a standard windows help file

Upload the midi file to the folder named Temp "folder for Steve." I
will take a peek. Not sure if that will lead to a solution, but I'll
give it a try. --Steve

I uploaded a TSCY file from the Orbit 3 group for bank 3, I think. See
if that one loads (or do you get the same errors?).

Also, in the file you have, how many SysEx banks does it have?

Re: problems with preset upload

Unfurtunely I've alredy tried that file...
in fact I've tried the one downloaded from rob papen site and the one
downloaded from orbit 3 group with the same results.

I don't know how many sysex banks it have because cubase don't give me
any tool to count them!

but I've noticed that banks are not quantized, I mean that the
distance between them is not always the same. What do you think about
trying moving them to quantized position (1/8 for example)?

what else can I do? try another sequencer/program? if yes, which?
try another midi interface? I don't know why but I have the feeling
that the problem could be there...

Re: problems with preset upload

Hi
Think what you need to do is to ascertain that your setup is working
correctly with midi.
Have you tried dumping a sound bank etc into your seq then playing it
back to your command station to see if it loads correctly?
You did enable receiving and transmitting off sysex in the filter
menu of your seq as well? (cant remember if thats been mentioned..)
This should work with no problems if all is well.
Dont worry about the quantization.
Also you did set up the midi buffers as well in the command station
and cubase?
Cheers
Gonz

Re: problems with preset upload

2005-09-26 by steve_the_composer

To "play" a midi file containing sysex bulk data [presets] using
Windows XP, try the following:

1. Click: Start | Control Panel | Speech, Sounds, and Audio Devices
2. Click: Sounds and Audio Devices
3. Select the Audio Tab
4. In the MIDI section [MIDI music playback] select your midi out port.

This will cause any MIDI files played in Windows Media Player to go
out the selected MIDI port.

*** Be sure to change it back to your audio source when done--unless
you want all midi files to play to you gear. ***

I just ran a test. Even though I don't have the TCSY ROM, the method
was successful for the P2500. Here's what I did after doings steps 1 -
4 above:

5. Downloaded a sysex-patchbank-saved-as-mid file (saved it to the
desktop).
6. Started Windows Media Player.
7. Dragged the sysex-patchbank-saved-as-mid file to WMP

The midi file played automatically and sent the preset data out the
port I had selected in steps 1 - 4 above into the E-Mu,

[xl7] rack ears...

2007-08-01 by moose

i cant believe how much these command station rack ears go for... when i had my xl7 last year i bought 3 pairs at close-out prices in london, then sold 'em in the US for $40 each and still made $30 a pair!

just seen that on july 19th a pair went for $103! and i just had to pay $62 for my px7's ears... which now has that beat garden rom too.

so, looks like i'm keeping the px7!

You can always fabricate your own, its only a right angled piece of
steel with holes drilled in it.
I know its not that easy if you dont have the means to do it though.
If someone came up with the dimensions and hole positions (something
i might do myself..Time..)then a machine place would be able to knock
a bunch of these in no time for very cheap money.
We get 19" 48way XLR panels and other made up this way, if you give
them the drawings its easy.

Beat garden roms cool along with the protean drum.
I got it right when i brought my XL7 from the states.
It came with the XL7, Beat garden, Vintage synth and i brought the
Protean drum rom from Thomman in Germany for £70 at the time.
Maybe 2.5 years ago..
I hunted down the rom staight away as i had a feeling they would
become hard to find at some point.

i had an early version of my drumkit welded up by a local company who usually deal with big road-going stuff, and they thought it was cool to be doing something different.

i hope so!! *lol* the protean's are 'ok' compared to the arsenal i already have but i'm looking forward to laying the 2 chips together, filter sweeps etc. it'll be great for writing with the ibook...

i paid $240 for mine, which is a bit steep but cheaper than the $299 asking price for the protean chip! i managed to get the near-perfect px7 for $410 inc shipping, so at the end of the day its not too bad really.

right, i need to go make some noise...

I might have a go at making some rack ears up for the XL7.
I found a new 6U case at work that was going spare. I think it had a
small mixer in it. It was free so i can make good use of it!
I can get one of the guys at work to make more of these.
This one was made in the states by a company called DAB Audio.
The flight cases we make are a much higher quality than these.
I will still need one for the Quasimidi 309 thats in it at the moment.

Crazy these rom prices, i knew it would get silly thats why i maxed
out the XL7 from the start. Actually made the right decision for a
change!
I paid $800 for the XL7 with 3 roms and a new Emu launch pad thrown
in.(and some other stuff if i recall..)
Thats £400 in real money for me, not a bad deal really.

If anyone gets around to making rack ears, I might be interested in a
pair or two.

Re: rack ears...

If i get a chance over the weekend l'll take the side cheeks off my
XL7 and have a measure up.
Ive got a copy of Stardraw here, i need to have a play with that so
it would be a good first project to try out.
If i get a result l'll contact our machine place and get a quote for
them including black powder coating as well.
Anyone got any links for pictures of the originals?

Cheers
G
