MIDI routing

MIDI routing

2005-07-26 by zerocrossing2001

Hey,

When working with an outboard sequencer (such as a computer) and other synths, how do
you route the MIDI so that you can use all the channels of the XL-7 and use other synth
sources at the same time? My MIDI interface is a MOTU microExpress, (4 in-6 out) but I've
got their smaller (2x2) Fastlane as well. I ultimately want to control everything using a
Novation Remote61 which has 2 out, one in, one thru and a USB I/O.

My issue is I'm really keen on controlling the XL-7 with the Novation.

not entirely sure of what youre aiming to do but my main sequencer or
my favorite at least, fl studio, has only one remote input but i want
to use the keypads of my mp7 and the programable knobs to send messages
to fl studio as well as thte trigger pads.

i have the knobs and the triggers on out port b and the keys on out a
as wel as the transport then i use the midi ox mid router to rout all
output from my mp-7 to midi yoke 1. and then i also have the last 3
trigger buttons to send midi to a keykit thing that i made thatplays
sysex files to my mp7 to change multisetups. it's a setup thats still
in its alphastages tho. im using a 1x1 usb midi device sblive platinum
live drive midi i/o and an m-audio 2x2 midi interface

Right. I'm trying to do something a bit different. I think its
going to be a matter of me using my keyboard's second midi out and some creative
routing. I was hoping for another way, as I have a few multi-timbral devices that could
work this way.

Best OS?

2005-07-26 by Daniel Jarvis

Hi all Well,I have 1.01 on my xl7, which is working fine. but I can
update to latest OS

what experiences have you all had with the various strengths and weaknesses
of the varios OS? I would like to have the compact now and rMix that is one
the 2.0 but are there any drawbacks to the latest version? thanks much
Dan

forgot to mention that i also have my ms2000b reciving midi through
the software app...

but do you want to sent midi to everything just from your keyboard?
that's what i wanted the mp7 to do but unfortunately despite all of
its midi capability it still lacks in some fundamental areas. but i
am trying to make software work arounds to accomodate this.
(please excuse my spelling :))

Re: MIDI routing

2005-07-27 by steve_the_composer

(1) What are you trying to do? (Or are you exploring possible
options?)

(2) Does your MOTU have software and are you using it to set up user
routing configurations?

I have the MT Express (8x8 midi router, parallel port version--
not usb). For Win98SE there is Console software; for WinXP there is
Cockworks. They also have Mac software.

There are so many variations. For example, I have one user preset
on the MTXP and one corresponding E-Mu Multisetup where Sonar (on the
PC) is the master. I have a different MTXP/E-Mu setup for pattern
creation on the E-Mu using a single keyboard.

Also, I have an almost empty pattern template to record on the E-Mu
sequencer tacks for external devices. (Each track in the template
pattern has volume data to preserve the external track setting.)

For older gear (Roland Intelligent Arranger), I used to have MOTU
presets (1) for Cakewalk as master clock and (2) for the intelligent
arrager as master clock.

If your MOTU uses software for setting up user presets like the
MTXP, the possibilities are almost limitless--depending on what you
are trying to do.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, that helps a lot I think. My issue was I think I was trying to make a "Mark" preset
and it's not going to happen. I'm going to have to make a few of them that address
different tasks and use both outputs of my MIDI controller for full flexibility. Man, my
setup is becoming so complex it's hurting my head! I can't wait until it's put together.

Glad it (hopefully) helped. Having control over so many possible
combinations can be mind boggling. --Steve
