The main point of the Audition Mode is to have a factory created
pre-recorded mini-sequence so you can hear what the preset sounds like
in a musical context and maybe give you an inspiration as to how to use
the preset. It can be used as a fill also while playing another
sequence. It is not editable within the box.

You could record it into an external sequencer and then record it back
into the box onto an internal track. Then you could edit it if you like.

Again, the original intent of Audition Mode, which exists on all of the
other E-mu modules, was for a quick way to just test out the preset.
This is especially useful on the music store floor when you are wanting
to listen to the potential of the box. Of course they are useful for
other reasons too...

Auditions Riffs are stored with each of the available sound sets in ROM.
In order to edit them you would have to move it to RAM, and then there
would need to be a sequence editor. The other modules don't have the RAM
to do that, and they don't have a sequence editor. That is one reason we
developed the **-7 boxes - to take Auditions (and Beats) to the next
logical step.

In XL/MP-7 there are over a hundred sequences that come with the box
that you can edit. That seems like a good starting point for
*inspiration* to <presumably> then write your own sequences :-)

It might be a nice thing if there were a built in way to copy Auditions
to a RAM pattern location. But again, there is already a round-about way
to do it like I said, by sending them to an external sequencer and
record back in. Another option would be for E-mu to post all the Riffs
at the website. Or some other industrious user out there might be
willing to do that while we work on other things... :-)

Copying Preset to a track ?

2001-09-10 by Mwl007@aol.com

I know this may sound like a stupid question, but i've literally
figured out eveything else on this machine except this..How do i
assign a preset to an unassigned track? I've tried to record..copy
and paste..nothing..It ends up on the track..but when I enable the
track and play..nothing, no sound? What is my dumb ass doing wrong?
Thanks!!

So you know what I'm doing that's not working..here are my steps.
1. Press pattern mode - go to empty patteren
2. Find a preset I want to use
3. Press save/copy
4. scroll to copy preset - Press enter
5. Back to petter
6. Press edit pattern
7. Paste clipboard to track 1 - Press enter
8. Back to pattern
9. Press track 1 -- nothing?

Please help...thanks!

You can't copy a preset to a track.........you only can record a preset(step, grid or realtime) to a track.

So why the audition button...just a tease? Dosen't make any sence? So why are we able to change the arp and riff of a preset if we cannot use them? Please clear up my ignorance..thanks!!

First of all, no question is driven by ignorance......

You can make changes(Arp, effects, filter) to presets and then SAVE them as user presets. Then you can use then in your tracks by recording them into your tracks.

that's what I know

I don't own an XL-7 (not yet I am saving the pennies and ditching my RM1X...bye bye shitty sound set, crappy interface and non-editable synth engine.

That said I have dowloaded the PDF manual and woohoo what a synth engine. My understanding of the unit would be this. Recreate the preset arp in the user configurable set up and save it. Program the preset how you like and assign the user arp setting to it. Open up sequncer track one for argument sake and assign that user preset to the given midi channel. Sequence a pattern.....record all your knob tweaks and away you go. My impression is that audition button is much like a compare button on a sampler. You audition all those edits/tweeks of your presets before comiting them to the user bank sets for use in your compositions... Just my 2 cents worth but with all new gear you need to get into the mind-set and working methods of that one machine. It took me 2 years to really get the most out of my RM. So I am not going to expect overnight miracles when I change to this platform either...

Thanks again scoll! Yea that does make sence..I just hate using factory
patterns, I feel like IM cheating. At least when I comletly change a preset I
"sort of" feel like IM being creative, I sure wish I could use them
internally without having to sample them, It seems logical? Oh well, Present
patterns, here I come .(for now at least) One good thing, at least my little
dilemma has given me the ability to learn this damn machine like the back of
my hand. Thanks for your help!!

Maybe you didn't understand. If you play the audition it will come out
as MIDI out the MIDI Out jack and then you can record that into your
external sequencer. (There's a setting in I think the MIDI or Global
menu to enable that.) Then you have exactly what I think you want - a
MIDI version of the Riff that you can then edit to your heart's content,
which you can then record back into your XL-7 or import it using
E-Loader. You don't have to "sample" it - if by that you mean record it
in the audio domain.

Oh shit! Yea..I thought i would have to (audio) saple. So you can send midi
through the audition..great..I'll figure it out. Thanks! I checked for the
setting, couldn't find it. But I will dig deeper, if you know exactly where
it is, let me know. Thanks for the info. there is hope!

It's called 'Riffs Transmit MIDI' or something like that. Not sure what
menu - MIDI or Global I think. I don't have an XL-7 in front of me right
now.

Enjoy,

Thanks scott!! But as soon as you've got an xl-7 in front of you, can you let
me know where that information is...I couldn't find it for the life of me..
Thanks!!!

It's the 3rd screen in the arp menu. Note that you don't even need to
involve another sequencer to do this. Simply hook a MIDI cable from out to
in and record. Make sure you mute the other tracks and set the track you're
recording into to be "int" only in the 2nd to last pattern edit screen.
