Just wondering, as I still have mine, but have been thinking about
selling it. Then again... maybe not...

Mmmh, i'm not selling mine in the short term. I have my MC-505 too, and i'm not selling it even if i find myself uisng more the xl-7 for sequencing. The XL7 is a good machine. There could be better... but why should i go and change for another, having to learn everything again from the beginning ? Gearlust may become an obstacle for music making...

What other sequencers/synths workstations are out there less than $500 US that can do what this machine can do?

the Yamaha RS 7000 is pretty beefy! I got mine for
$450 (lucky) and am using both the Xl-7 and the
RS....the RS has everything layed out well allowing
you to tweak without having to use the scroll wheel
everytime.....it also has a sampler which is nice for
drum kits....only drawback is the stock sounds aren't
nearly up to par with my Xl-7 (Techno,Beat Garden, and
Xl-7 lead Rom) but the stock sounds are still cool in
the fact that they are basic wave shapes and you can
process them like crazy with the onboard effects....oh
and the filters are much better on the RS...even
though I use my Akai MFC 42 quite bit for more of an
analog feel.....

my two cents

Re: are there still proud owners out there?

2005-01-13 by gonzinigonz

Yep, still glad i brought mine..
Ive tryed (and owned..) MPC2K, QM309, MMT8's.
Got to say that the command station is powerful enough with the
features it has to create good sounding tracks on its own.
I dont like many of the presets but that is where you ve got to get
in there and program your own.
Mine was expanded (XL-7) with the Techno synth construction yard and
the beat garden rom. I put in the Protean drum rom as well.
With all of that in there there are 3037 (ish..!) samples, thats alot!
How many kick drums etc do you really need??
Ive heard some stuff come out of this box that sounds very much like
my Waldorf XT (not 100% of course). Thats good in my world.
I wish that you could map out your own drum kits more sensibly beyond
the 4 layer and transposing layers.. also wish it had a flash card
interface.
I sat here yesterday wondering about the filters, very subtle at
times to the point of not working?? But then you change the sample
are they spring into life. Depends on a samples harmonic make up i
guess.
Also i find the effects buss routing stange as well. Maybe this was a
hardware limitation? It works though..
Ive still got a lot more to figure out about this box, but its deep
enough to get right in there. Love it!
At the end of the day i find this more creative interface than the
MPC which i did feel was a battle at times, then it would crash..
The QM309 is amasing in a simular way but lacks any real power. Great
for crunchy techno and sampling from.
MMT8's are MMT8's...
Dont know much about the roland groove boxes, other than i didnt take
then too seriously.. Didnt like the sound of them at all, same
old "sound" and no bollox.

Cheers a
Gonz

I bought mine almost a year ago, and have absolutely no intention of
selling it. I have barely scratched the surface of this thing.

Same here! It has taken me a year just to get comfortable with all
the features of the unit. Theres a whole lot here to explore. You
could spend years just figuring out the mod matrix. If you are
feeling tired of it, try slapping a new rom in.

Yeah... I hame my MP-7 still, and really have not scratched the
surface of it yet either. I am just trying to see what the group
support base is looking like these days. Although I almost sold it
6 months ago, and then chickened out. I just need one more rom, and
it's full.

Currently I have the following 3 installed:

PlanetPhatt
Beat Garden
Protean

I am not sure what the last one will be, but I am looking for the
World Percussion ROM. Maybe some day...

I still have mine and will not give it up. With World, Vintage and
ZR ROM's it is great for composing most anything. I don't miss
sampling and I cannot find anything quite like it in the software
world. Orion Platinum is pretty close to the work flow but it takes
a lot of sounds to equal a 4x XL7, and it takes a good computer to
put out that many voices.

I programmed all the knobs in the PROGRAM section to control different parameters of my Microkorg. Amazing ! Now i can change in real time the delay speed and the delay amount at once, and it makes wonderful flanging sounds. It's like having a new synth.

I'm with you. I just bought a used MP7. Threw my World, Protozoa,
and Beat Garden ROMs in and I'm having a blast with it. I still
prefer to sequence large projects on the computer, but for laying down
quick beats, as an idea scratchpad, and for performance, the xx7's
rock!
