I was editing a preset and got so familiar with saving patterns and preset that I sometimes anticipate the motion. It was probably my slight of hand that when I saved a preset I received a "saving error!!!" on the display. The second line read "Making backup..." and the next display read "compacting free space..." At this point I completely froze. I let it do its thing until finished. It took well over 3 minutes. I checked my preset and eveything was cool and didn't even require a reboot. Any idea what happened?

Tommy, I got the same message but on my P2K. I was told by Scott Ruda that it is a sort of memory management system prompt that occurs every now and then depending on how ofter you save. Once I find the exact message, I will send it to you. Sorry, Here you go........... From: Scott Ruda <scottr@e...> Date: Thu Jan 3, 2002 2:41 am Subject: Re: [p2k] Re: Making backup? It is totally normal for a unit to occasionally do a compaction on the User Data. As others have speculated, it is mainly for resolving Flash library fragmentation. It is only done when absolutely needed, mostly because it requires the system be 'offline' for a short period of time to do it - and you don't want that to happen every time you save a preset. The frequency that compaction occurs is dependent on how much editing of User Data you do, and therefore some people will see it more often than others. A backup of the User Data is made in case the system is powered down during the compaction, in which case the unit will revert to the backup and do the compaction again at a more appropriate time. That being said, all of this has nothing to do with CPU RAM and the issues resolved by the 1.21 release. That change was done so that the CPU RAM could load Sound SIMMs that have large amounts of Factory Data. Since Demos are only needed when you want to play them and are not needed during 'normal' operation, they are now only loaded when needed, freeing up space for the stuff you want in there all the time (like Instruments, Presets, Arps, Riffs etc) Scott --- In xl7@y..., erik_magrini@B... wrote: > Can't see it unless you're a member of P2k. :( > > rEalm > > > > > > "emufreak1" <mmcquay@m...> > 01/30/02 02:31 PM > Please respond to xl7 > > > To: xl7@y... > cc: > Subject: [xl7] Re: I got a "Saving Error!!!" message. > > > http://groups.yahoo.com/group/p2k/message/8282 > > > > Here you go Tommy. > > > --- In xl7@y..., "emufreak1" <mmcquay@m...> wrote: > > Tommy, > > > > I got the same message but on my P2K.
