Hmmm ... on page 93 under "Deleting a Pattern" it says:

10. Pressing the ERASE button (located below the controller knobs) 
erases the currently selected step from the Song


Oh REALLY? Not for me it seems! Can anyone verify this or tell me how 
to delete patternsfrom songs? One misstep presently means that I have 
to ERASE the Song and start over - ick!

HI, Ive not done really anything in song mode yet other than seeing 
how it worked, been to busy :o(
Ive just tryed it on my XL-7.
If i insert say 5 patterns in the song then try to remove say the 3rd 
pattern / step by pressing erase, it looks as if nothings happened 
until i step backwards or forwards then the LCD gets updated.
Press repeat to insert a pattern. 
Are you sure that the pattern / step is not really being deleted, ie 
you play it back and its still there?
Maybe your just seeing what im seeing in that the LCD isnt being 
updated so it looks as if nothings happened when in fact it has..
