Which step editor? Song Step Edit (inserting patterns), Pattern Step
Edit (inserting notes), or maybe even Pattern Grid Edit (the 808 style
editor)?

The PLAY key will step to the next step. Also, if you have "Auto" (for
auto step) set to Y (for "yes") it will increment after each release of
a chord. Even more cool is the ability to "get a chord right" before
releasing. As long as you hold at least one note, it won't step. All
the notes you release together will get inserted. This makes it so you
can more one chord to a different chord, and as long as you release the
new chord together, that will be the one that gets saved at the step.
Unfortunately, there is no "back step" command.

I think the manual is pretty detailed on this, but I could be wrong...

Yep, you can use the knobs to do this in Step mode! Check the manual for
details, but basically while you are in step edit mode, pressing the Quick
Knobs select button toggles between the knobs controlling velocity and
duration.

It's just a shame you cannot set the note lengths over 100% (ie. tie the
notes within step edit).

Such a missed opportunity and one that often requires me to move back to
software for sequencing. It is invaluable for triggering an external
sampler/sampled drums where the ability to have some mixed 16th/8th/qtr
note lengths is often required...

And especially annoying when if you record a legato phrase manually and
go to step edit, the display shows a 't' where the % duration is
normally adjusted, but if you edit the note length the 't' goes!

This is my only/biggest criticism of an otherwise excellent instrument!

Just to keep from confusing anyone, you can do this in *Grid* edit, but
not *Step* edit. I know, I know, I'm too picky, and there are a
gazillion different editors in the box (realtime, grid, pattern step,
song step, list).
