Today I used my XL7 for the first time with my free-improv electro-acoustic group (the type of free improv played by Derek Bailey, Fred Frith, etc.). I mostly used arp presets, hitting the tap tempo button to match the improvisations of my bandmates, tweaking knobs, etc. A simple approach, but it seemed to work. I also tried a bts patch but it didn't allow enough "room" to improvise. Any thoughts from others doing this kind of activity would be appreciated. Paolo

I am surprised you didn't use X-MIX. I can improvise for hours using X-MIX, although it would be harder if the others are leading and you are following. If I am leading, I can do things like, just before I switch into a random bassline, tell the others to lay out for a half bar until they hear the new bassline, analyze the key and then come in. Works pretty well that way. Once the groove is in place, I will randomly move through presets using X-MIX and then bring in a part very quietly (or louder on my headphones but not out front) and listen hard and fast. If it doesn't sound good, or I realize it is in the wrong key, I will just immediately nix it--such doesn't usually take me more than 1/2 a bar so no actual damage is done. I will basically flip the channels fast until something sounds right and then lay it in. Then I can concentrate on either the new line or an older one and start changing the patches or tweaking them a little at a time before moving on to others to tweak. When it all gets stale, then I call a moment to the mates and move for another bassline then repeat . . .

X-MIX is yet another feature I wasn't even aware of. My study of the XL7 documentation has been focused on the bound manual - I hadn't paid much attention to the addenda docs, except when the manual told me to try something and it didn't work as written. ;)`Dunno why I surprised you - I never passed myself off as anything other than a beginner here. Thanks for telling me about X-MIX! I'll try it ASAP. Because of the focus of our trio, I'll emphasize patterns that use symmetrical scales (diminished, whole-tone, etc.) or are not specifically pitched (eg. percussion). It helps a lot that the other two players use electric fretless instruments (upright bass and violin). Probably a good idea to get the latest manual revision and have that printed out (about $20 at kinkos). Besides all the new features being integrated into one document, the overall organization is way, way better IMO. Makes much more sense, and a lot less repetition. rEalm X-MIX is yet another feature I wasn't even aware of. it is so worth the money to have kinko's or some other copy shop print and spiral bind the addendum.. having hardcopy to read is awesome! --- In xl7@yahoogroups.com, "paolovalladolid" <paolovalladolid@y...> wrote: > X-MIX is yet another feature I wasn't even aware of.
