Has anyone painted their controler?

Has anyone painted their controler?

2004-08-12 by guruinu2

Greetings, I am in love with the warm,Fat tone of my MP-7 but find
the graphics and color scheem.. ah...something to be desired. I was
wondering if anyone had painted their unit and what might be
involved in such an act of kindness? Thanks,Guruinu2

Re: Has anyone painted their controler?

2004-08-13 by gonzinigonz

I thought about that as well..
The orange / yellow colour of the XL-7 not as nice as the mW2..
I have a friend that makes some hardware electronics and has to do
the front legends for controls.
I wanted to label the knobs and buttons up again. He said you can
take a high resolution photo of the front panel and play with it in
photo shop or the like. Make up a new ledgends and get it printed on
the front. I like the look of the PX-7, looks a lot better than
these...
One day..

Re: [xl7] Re: Has anyone painted their controler?

2004-08-13 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

1. Disassemble unit, pretty easy to do, takes about 5 minutes.
2. Sand and primer case, you have to do a good job to get rid of the
original graphics, as they raised slightly above the powder coating and
will show through when you paint if you do a crappy job.
3. Go to automotive paint supply store and have them mix up some chroma
paint (also known as color shift) and put it into a spray can (not all
shops can do this, call first). Any paint color will work, I just
happened to want mine with color shift.
4. Paint the unit base coat, I used black and blue, black on the bottom
that slowly fades to blue up top. Then apply the color shift paint,
smooth strokes and lots of lightcoats versus one or two heavy ones. Let
the unit dry for a few hours, and then put it in direct sunlight as much
as you can over the next week. You really need to make sure that the
paint is 100% dry before you go any further, don't rush this step, or
you'll really screw things up.
5. The hardest part, finding a print shop that will redo the labels for
you. Took me weeks to find a place that would deal with one off custom
orders, but eventually I did and they made up a screen of the original
lettering and screen that on in light blue.
6. Again, wait a week or so with the unit in sunlight as much as possible
before you reassemble. Good luck with all the LED light pipes!

The shop that did mine still has the original screen, so I can help people
get this done if they're are interested. Like I said before though, it's
probably going to be about $100 or so just to get the letters redone,
maybe less if I take a few of them there at once.

Lot's more info on this from when I originally did it, so search the
archives.

I have a PX-7, so I already like the color, but I didn't like those
cheap plastic endpieces, so I took 'em off and made up some nice oak
end-cheeks, for a more 'classic gear' look (plus, now it will fit
into a 19" rack on a sliding drawer.

Re: Has anyone painted their controler?

2004-08-17 by _5ht

There is a company that is dedicated to pimping out your MPC. Why
not the same for the Commands Stations?

My main problem with my PX-7 (the only complaint really) are the
buttons. They look and feel cheap. Maybe some day we will be able to
replace them (or add a layer to the top) to make them rubbery or
somehow cooler, with better tactile feel.

That photo of the painted XL7 is beast. Very Psytrance. I may put a
tasteful sticker on my PX but only on the black side things.

I've magically owned two XL7s, and there was a noticable difference in the
buttons and pads from the original US-made $1100 version, and the
more-recently-purchased $400 China-made version.
The US pads were softer, suppler, and stickier, and just provided a better
feel.
More like an ASR-X
The button feel was less notable, but the US version felt just a tad more
"solid".
Is it worth the price difference? Hahah no- soundwise they both seemed the
same :)

Tho- if you're just looking for a more rubbery feel (which now that I think
about it, would be desireable), I'm sure there is some kind of grip compound
you could just neatly paint on every button to make them nice...

Yeah, ended up with a PX-7, won it in a raffle at a local music store.
I've been debating painting that one too, not sure I have the time right
now though....

Yeah, seen that before too. Those guys charge CRAZY amounts of money
though, way too over-priced if you ask me. Here's a link:

There is a company that is dedicated to pimping out your MPC. Why
not the same for the Commands Stations?
