Time for a new contest?

Time for a new contest?

2004-08-02 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

Anybody interested in doing a new Command Station contest? Been awhile
since the last one, and we've all got new ROMs now. I was thinking
something different, maybe like having a best pattern contest or
something. You only have 32 measures to show us what you can do on your
XX-7, and you can only use the XX-7 (no other gear, mastering, etc).

What do you guys think?

I have a virtual XX-7: P2500 --> XL-1.  Can I enter as long as I only
use the E-Mu sequencer and factory ROMS?

(I assume custom-made ROMS are off-limits.)

Also, can 32 measure pattern be showcased in a longer than 32 measure
song using just track mutes--ie, no song-mode controllers, preset
changes, etc.?

Your gear qualifies Steve, close enough! :) I'm actually trying to keep
all "songs" to 32 measures in length for a few reasons:

- It's something different, forces you to work in new ways when you have
such limited time to get your point across.
- Smaller storage space and shorter downloads if we have to use the files
section for hosting.
- Hoping it will be less intimidating for newbies and they will
participate too.

Thanks. The reaqsons for the 32 (or less) measure standard make
sense!! Count me in.

it'd be really swell for everyone to list the patches used on each
channel, preset or custom, just to give folks an idea of how the song
is constructed.

what i'm wondering is: is this to be a song with a length of 32
measures, or a song based on one 32-measure pattern with mutes, volume
automation, etc. i'm gathering it is the former but it's still not
entirely clear.

That is what I had been wondering, too. The answer was indeed the
former--a 32 measure composition. I see the value of doing it this
way. It is a compositional challenge to do make a musical statement
as succinctly as possible.

Looking forward to hearing what otthers do.

>>>Except that a lot of people will probably use custom patches. Not
reason we can't make a requirement of the contest that you must also
upload your pattern data and the presets used as well though. What do you
guys think? <<<

>>>Yes, the former. Your entire song cannot be more than 32 measures long
at any reasonable tempo (don't ask me what reasonable is though). <<<
