new user question about midi

new user question about midi

2004-04-07 by davidnadelman

I am sure this is going to the most lame question posted within the
last few days. I am awaiting my xl-7, I have ordered the protean
drums rom. My computer is slightly old and I don't think that it has
a connection capable of the eloader which makes me worry because I
want all the rom has to offer. So could you tell me.

1. How I would find out if I am able to use midi in's and outs on my
computer?

2. If I need hardware for this any cheap suggestions that would work
with an older machine

3. How screwed am I without midi capabilities. thanks for all the
help.

if you have a PC use the USB port. if you're on Macintosh (like me) you
better have:

a) a computer capable of running Mac OS 9.x - your "slightly old"
description would probably satisfy this.

b) a MIDI connection of some kind.

for cheap MIDI connections, i've found the MOTU FastLane USB interfaces very
effective. 2 in/2 out with no power cable (bus powered) and a nice switch to
send the MIDI ins directly through to the MIDI outs. i have things wired so
that with the passthrough off, my MIDI sequencer (Digital Performer) can
control all of the synths, but with the passthrough on i can have my XL-7
drive everything else. nifty!

I think you still need MIDI, even if you have a USB port. Don't ask me why.

I've used E-Loader successfully on a first-generation Power Mac (upgraded to a G3, but still) running OS 8.6 (might have even been 8.5). I believe I had to update the Java, but that was it.

I just want to make sure that there is not going to be any problem
using the MOTU FastLane USB for using the E loader program with my xl-
7. The reason I ask is that I have read that in order to get the
sequences and patterns off the internet or the cd rom you need to be
able to transfer info through midi? is this correct
