Vintage ROM Drums?

Vintage ROM Drums?

2004-04-06 by robotchas

I'm curious - could someone who has either the XL or PX ROM (or both) and the Vintage ROM tell me whether the Vintage drum samples add anything useful? I have an XL with a slot reserved for the Protean Drums and am eyeing the Vintage ROM as well, but I'm a little put off by the thought of lots of duplicate percussion samples.

I'm also curious whether anyone who has the Vintage ROM and a decent VA finds the Vintage ROM essential. It'd be nice to get some more raw synth waves, to take more of the load off my Virus, but only if I'm going to actually use them. (I don't have much interest in the EP/organ sounds, I'd really be getting it for things like the Solina sample(s)).

I find it really hard to believe that the Vintage ROM will replace a VA.
They all just have a completely different "sound" to them. I agree, if
you have a Virus, the need for the Vintage Rom is problem not that big.

I feel that the Vintage ROM is a good replacement for the Vintage Synth
or Ultimate Keys roms from Roland. If you have it, you can sell those
and not miss them.

the drum sounds on the the Vitnage ROM are nothing to write home about.
but it's synth sounds are to die for. i love that ROM for rich, fat, classic sounds
and fun sound design.

do you have one slot or two open in your **-7? if you have two, then there's no
question to get BOTH (protean Drums and Vintage.) if you only have one, and
you have a VIrus, then just get the Protean drums.

Thanks for the responses, guys. Are the drums worth having at all, if I have the PX and XL roms?

I was thinking it might be good to have some high string pad sounds, since the Virus is a little weak at the high end, but I think I'll just hold off for now unless/until I see a good deal on the Vintage rom.

Ah! Now all my questions are answered. Thanks.

Protean definitely, since the primary use of my XL is as a drum machine. Then at some point I may fill it out with the Vintage and perhaps TSCY roms, just to have some more synth flavors. I was eyeing the orchestral roms too, but I really just want lots of solo and ensemble strings, which I can't get in a single rom, and the reviews have not been as glowing as for the other roms, so I'll probably look elsewhere for that at some point.

Bad idea. I'd buy it today. It's one of the best ROMs of the bunch,
right up there with Protean and World. Very complimenary to the PX-7
kits... Plus, it could disappear at any time like so many other ROMs;
then you'd pay through the nose later!

Even if I have the XL ROM and a Virus? I still want it at some point, but it
seems like more of a luxury than an essential.

You make a good point. Those World Expo prices on Ebay are crazy.

It's a great compliment to the Virus. I own both and I'm glad I do. Look
for Aeon's review of the Vintage rom in this forum's archive.

That's actually the main reason I'm considering getting it. Aeon had some
good comments in a Harmony Central discussion on the ComStats, too.
