Emu XL-7 & MP-7 User's Group

Hi everyone... a couple of things have come up recently that I wanted 
to ask about.

I have been using an external controller with my XL. It's always 
worked like a champ, controls the XL and all my other gear just fine. 
However, when I switched over to song mode, I couldn't get any 
response from my external gear...

I guess my question is this... If I am in pattern mode, and I press 
Tap+Track mute, it jumps to that track, and I can play whatever 
instrument is set up there with my controller... When I am in song 
mode, this does not work.  So what does this key combination do in 
Song mode?  Does it select the *channel* number of whatever output is 
selected under SONG CHANNEL ASSIGN?  That seems to be what's 
happening, but I just want to verify...

And that leads me to another question...  I can only record data for 
A channels *or* B channels on the song track? In my setup, A channels 
are used for the XLs internal synth, and the B channels go to my 
other equipment.  This means that I will only be able to record 
volume pan and mod information to the song track for either the XL or 
everything else...  Is that correct, and if so, is there anything I 
can do to get around it?  I know I could record the changes into 
patterns, but are there other ways as well?

It selects the basic *channel* as you've found out.  It will pick that
numbered channel on A or B, depending on where the song track output is
going.

Yeah, that's kinda a bummer.  What I'd recommend is setting the song
track to be MultiB *both*.  Then put blank presets on the XL-7 B
channels that you want external, and put blank presets on the external
gear's channels that you want internal.  Unfortunately, that's the only
workaround I can think of.  It'll work fine as long as the internal
channels you need for the song track plus the total number of channels
you'll need for the external synth is less than or equal to 16.
