nu skool bass production question

nu skool bass production question

2004-03-17 by dj 61

I am looking to get that nu skool bass synth sound. Dom um
ahhhhh well you know what I mean. The sound and getting it patterned
out. I know many are different, but most are similar. Please don't
tell me to get a virus or just listen to tracks I really like and
try to mimic them....
I can tell many are made up of multiple notes perhaps a major
chord broke down. Since they seem to be modeling an analog sound I
assume the glide is not used. What I really want is a model to
study, a preset preferably using one of the command station roms and
the notes.
Thanks,
   Tom

PX-7 Filter Glitch/Bug?

2004-03-17 by Mark Fitt

Hi,

Anyone out there with a PX-7 OS2.0 that can confirm this glitch?

Play Factory Pattern 24, and mute all tracks.
	Enable Track 11, and listen.
Enable Track 10, the filter on track 11 should no Click and Pop.

Seems to be a problem with the EarlyRizer 12th Order Filter, I've had
bugs like this on the Proteus-2000 on an older OS revision, which was an
allocation problem.

This 'effect' also occurs on some other patterns, this one does so on a
much lighter load than the others......

   Thanks,
	Mark.

Some of the E-mu 12th order filters are *really* hot and peaky. With
certain sounds, those peaks can generate pops (basically, you're
peaking just the right frequency in the source material). I do agree
that the factory sounds and especially the patterns shouldn't have Q up
so high on those presets. Turn down Q a few notches and all will be
fine.

PS. there was a thread on this exact filter not too long ago which came
to the same conclusion you did (though not quite as fast as you did!)

Thanks for the info Aaron, yeah filters are def quite hot on the Proteus
based range. Just found it rather odd that any other parts on that pattern
where less likely to cause the spike. Shame it's not likely to get addressed!

It's not quite a bad as the older bug on the p2k, that would sometimes
(give the effect of a ) change the cutoff randomly during playback, really
annoying when trying to write a cd and get one good take ;)

         Mark.

Well, the only way it would be addressed is to limit Q on those
presets, since it's *definitely* a feature to have hot filters. If
E-mu were still manufacturing ROMs, they might have, but it seems
they're not, so I guess it's up to you to fix it in the user preset.
Little known fact: most presets only have maximum Q set at 80% instead
of 100%. You're free however to go in and change the "MidiB->'FiltRes"
patchcord to whatever you want though... =)

That bug was a pain in the ass. You'd be amused to know that we never
figured out what caused that bug and never figured out how to fix it.
It went away on its own in the next release. It *did* however
resurface when I was working on the 2.00 OS. I backed out some
seemingly irrelevant changes and it went away...

Gotta love coding, bug's like that are a real pain, as you seem to know
all too well ;)
