PX-7 Slowdown (I got it too now!)

PX-7 Slowdown (I got it too now!)

2004-02-17 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

Damn, the same day I said I hadn't really seen this, I run into it later
that night big time. I was working on a new downtempo pattern, and all of
a sudden everything got super sluggish on me. At first, there was about a
2 second pause between my actions and what the screen said. Eventually
the more I played with this, the longer the pause got until it was closer
to 10 seconds lag! The weird thing is, it only happens on this one
pattern (using ONLY the Studio Kit Preset too), if I go to another
pattern, everything was instantly fine. If I powered off/on and came back
to this same pattern, eventually it would start again. I've put the
Pattern file here in case anyone can test this on their PX-7 (or XX-7 with
Drum ROM):

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/xl7/files/Command%20Station%20Data/

It's called "No Control" and will load by default to Pattern Bank 1:001.
I'd appreciate it if anyone can check this one out, as it's only happening
with this pattern, and I want to return my PX-7 if I'm the only one with
this problem (aside from the original poster). I didn't get a chance to
see if it was just the preset causing this, as it didn't rear it's ugly
head until I was ready for bed :)

To try and solve this, I deleted all sysex, controller, and aftertouch
info from the pattern thinking maybe that would help (it didn't). There
were no stuck notes either.

Hello,

I bought my PX7 last week because of the hype of the blow out at
Guitar Center. I plan to sequence my synths with it, and make some
beats.

Has anyone recorded a patterm and while twirling the control knobs
experience the PX7 slowing down. There was a major lag time when you
hit the button switching the mode from quick edit to volume to pan.
You could hit the button several times fast and it would take a few
seconds for the switch to occur. Has this happened with anyone else,
or is there something wrong with my machine?

I'll give it a try on my PX-7. I need to find some time to pick up my own USB midi
interface, so it may be a couple of days before I test it. I'll let you know what happens.

I have this same problem ... only with one pattern ... when I hit play it just sits there and the starts about 10 secs. later as well .... is that what you mean ?

The other problem I have been having is getting the stop button to STOP.... I have blasted it with air and tried pushing it several different ways.... I don't think it's the switch... it just kinda lags as well .

Everything sounds fine though !

rEalm,

I don't know why you got rid of your Custom XL. If it wasn't
broken......:)

PS. Can you upload pattern 5 to the files section for me? It was
missing on the CD and the download on E-MU's website.

Re: PX-7 missing pattern 005

2004-02-17 by mike

I added it to the "files" section. The CD has the data, but no name. Found the name in the
manual. It's called Nasty Nemesis. (Had the same prob. when I reloaded my pattterns)

I checked out your pattern and the same thing happens on my
PX-7!! I first noticed a lag when selecting tracks, then scrolling
through presets on the screen was delayed and jumpy.

I switched the four drum tracks to "Funk Review" and everything
was back to normal.

Another interesting thing is that I'm using the same preset (005
Studio) on a couple of patterns I'm working on. They work just
fine. I haven't recorded any knob movements in any of the
patterns or applied any effects yet. (Just thought I'd throw that out
there.)

Also, I do have the Proteus and X-Lead ROM's installed.

Re: PX-7 Slowdown (I got it too now!)

This *may* be related:

I've not yet noticed this on my PX-7 (though I fully expect to see
it eventually)

However, my P2K has been exhibiting similar behavior ever since I
upgraded the ROM to 2.X (when they added the arps/beats)...

Whenever I dial up one of the BTS presets, hit Audition and turn up
the "complexity" controller, the user interface gets very laggy. In
fact, I can turn off Audition, and the pattern continues to play for
perhaps 1.5 to 2 bars before stopping (during this time, the knobs
and buttons are almost totally unresponsive), then everything
suddenly returns to normal.

This is particularly apparent in the denser World Expedition Beats,
but my hunch is that it is a predictable behavior in BTS mode
whenever the pattern gets really busy.

Is this what y'all are talking about? If so, it is
probably "expectable behavior" and the P2K engine has been doing it
for years. I surprised to learn that the Command Stations do it
too, considering the engine is supposed to be "3 times faster" than
the P2K series.

It's a minor annoyance, but it's never really gotten in my way. I
reckon we'd better get used to it.

Weird! This is only pattern this happens on, and only when using the
Studio kit! Like you, as soon as I change the kit, it plays back fine.
Any ideas emu? I tried using the other Protean Drum ROM I had to make
sure this one wasn't faulty, and it too did the same thing.

I found out something else about your pattern. It seems that track 5 (cym. ride) is the
culprit. If you mute that track before playing the pattern, everything's normal. Unmute it,
or solo it, and the problem returns. When I loaded your pattern, I have note data on tracks
1, 3, 5, 7, and synth (PROM card) on 10. (Just wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything
when I downloaded it. I noticed there were presets assigned to the other tracks, just no
note info.)

Did you do something different when you recorded track 5 vs. the others?

Mike

To be honest, I only listened to it long enough to be sure the data was there. I can't
remember what it sounded like exactly, but I know It didn't set my world on fire. I posted
the file only because some people were asking about it.

Yes this more or less sounds like what I was experiencing as well. In the
past, I've noticed that denser passages in my patterns would sometimes
cause the XX-7 to be a bit less than responsive. But in those cases any
lag was relatively small (less than a second) and nothing more than a
minor annoyance as you suggest.

This is far worse though, with lag times of over 10 seconds at the extreme
end, certainly something you just can't "get used to". Especially as it's
a relatively simlpe pattern that exhibits this behavior.

Thanks for looking into this more Mike, I've been a bit too busy here to
have a chance to delve into this one too deeply. Yes, the preset
assignments you named are correct. I had meant to delete track 10, as it
used a Preset from a different ROM, but I forgot to do it, oops.

As for track 5, the only thing I did was enter step recording mode and hit
that crash key once, that's it. Interesting though, my next step will be
to try copying that track/preset to another Pattern and see if it still
causes problems.

rEalm

I found out something else about your pattern. It seems that track 5
(cym. ride) is the
culprit. If you mute that track before playing the pattern, everything's
normal. Unmute it,
or solo it, and the problem returns. When I loaded your pattern, I have
note data on tracks
1, 3, 5, 7, and synth (PROM card) on 10. (Just wanted to make sure I
didn't miss anything
when I downloaded it. I noticed there were presets assigned to the other
tracks, just no
note info.)

Did you do something different when you recorded track 5 vs. the others?
