Novice questions... editing & swapping patterns

Novice questions... editing & swapping patterns

2004-01-26 by elemental

Hello people,

I have been trying to get my head round the XX-7 sequencer, I like
it but jumping from 10 years on Cubase / Logic is quite a shift ...

Quick editing of patterns is a must - how do you guys go about it?
Record, then move off notes..?
Also I want to be able to shift patterns around, live as its
playing... is this possible or do you have to stop every time?

Also, for playing live I was hoping I might be able to swap tracks
within a playing pattern, like swapping a drum track for one with a
nice fill for an end of a section, then going back to the straight
loop... It seems the way to do this is use the loop function, having
say 8 bars of the main loop, then 8 bars of a fill section - keep it
going round till you want a change then allow it to cross into the
fill section.

Also, is there any way adding swing to an Arp pattern??

Thanks!

>>>Best thing you can do is to not compare the two. Or at least attempt
to not compare them while working, otherwise you end up wishing you could
do this or that instead of making music. <<<

Quick editing of patterns is a must - how do you guys go about it? Record,
then move off notes..?

>>>Yeah, pretty much. I typically set the metronome to the "note" symbol,
and then Press Play+Rec to put it into replace record mode. This way I
can just play my part for each track while the XX-7 loops. Once I get
somethign I'm happy with, I'll touch it up in Note List Edit, and then
Copy and Paste as/if needed. <<<

Also I want to be able to shift patterns around, live as its playing... is
this possible or do you have to stop every time?

>>>What do you mean by shift patterns? <<<

Also, for playing live I was hoping I might be able to swap tracks within

>>>Take a look at the XMIX function too, that could serve you well if you
kept one PAttern for fills,a nd one for the main parts. <<<

Also, is there any way adding swing to an Arp pattern??

>>>no. <<<

I mean shift along or back a few beats ... I think loop mode can do
this, but i want to be able to preview live and then save if I like
it.

Also

I have started using the PX-7 to control Live 3.0 - looks like it
could be lots of fun. I can get the XX-7 to start and stop Live, but
it does not reset the loop, so loops in Live go out of sync with
patterns playing on the PX-7. Any way to get it to reset Live?

Also, is there a way of using track mute buttons to control mutes in
Live??

Cheers Erik - always back with an answer!

Yeah you can Scale/Shift your tracks, but it's not a live thing. The
sequencer stops when you do this.

You can control almost every single thing in Live with the XX-7's, I had
an extensive play at this last year in fact. The best way to do it is
with the MIDI mapping in Live, versus trying to change what the XX-7
transmits. Sorry I can't be more specific, as excellent as Live is, it
wasn't what i was looking for, so I didn't purchase it.
