Questions from a newbie

Questions from a newbie

2004-01-25 by djiice30

I am thinking in investing in an Xl-7...I find that it is in my
current budget...BTw, what is the going price on the Xl-7, so I
won't get ripped off??

Since there are so many posts and very little time to read(i am a
fulltime student w/a wife...lol), I have some questions to ask...

My intent is to play live, rather than focus on studio recording...

Are any of you using the xl-7 or mp-7 in live "gig" situations...

if so, have they crashed often(if at all)?

I am focused on the dance, techno, trance genre; what would be good
expansion cards to get???

Lastly, what other hardware are you using to complement the xl-7?

I would like to use a novation remote 25...Is anyone out there using
this???

What other haredware would you reccommend???

Thank you,

DJIICE30

Buy the PX-7 from Musician's Friend. Read the archive of this group for
more info on how this is the best model at the best price.

I don't do any live gigging, but I can try and answer some other
questions...

I'm pretty sure the going price for a xl-7 is $499, I just got my PX-7
for that price, and bought the x lead-v2 rom for it. I think zzounds
has it for 499...

I don't know too much about the roms, but for dance/techno/trance, I
think that probably the only roms worth looking at are the pure phatt,
beat garden, and vintage modules.

The other hardware I have (as far as synths go anyway) are:
yamaha cs1x (my first "real" synth) - I like some of the sounds on it,
but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone
alesis qs-r (with the latin expansion, I'm considering the eurodance
one)
novation ks-4 - mmmm
alesis airsynth - I use this for adding "effects" to songs, and there's
one song where I'm using it as a primary instrument

I definitely recommend a compressor of some sort (i have an alesis
3630.) and a kaoss pad would be super cool for live effects (just have
that channel go out one of the sub outs)
and you'd be able to use that as a midi controller too.

As for roms the protean drums(px-7 rom) is a must, the xtreme lead
is nice, and if you added the TSCY and Beat Garden you will have the
orbit 3 soundset. I am not sure why the px-7 is the best model. Who
doesn't love purple and yellow. I looked a musicians friend and sure
enough the px-7 is $100 cheaper than the MP-7, $200 cheaper than the
2500 (less buttons more cost?) and the xl-7 was not even listed, how
unusual. It looks like e-mu has raised their prices... $995
I heard rumors last fall about people finding command stations for
around $300. You might want to shop around. Contact me when you want
some roms:)
Good luck you will be happy with any command station you choose,
but the mp-7 patterns and soundset are not really geared toward
dance, however you can tweak it to do whatever you want.

I have to disagree with you there - one of the strengths of the command
stations is that they are infinitely tweakable. I agree that the factory
mp-7 presets are more r'n'b and hip hop orientated, but you can still make
techno and drum n bass with them.

Perhaps my run-on sentence did not deliver the message clearly (I
have an mp-7 by the way). The mp-7 patternsand presets are not
really geared towards dance [patterns in particular]. You can,
however, tweak them to do whatever you want. I also have the drum
rom+px-7patterns, sied rom, and xlver2 rom+xl-7patterns(maybe I'll
switch back to ver 1). Not to mention my maxxed 2500... Sorry but I
am very proud of my MP-7 and could ramble for pages about it:) lol

Tom,
Quick question: Why are you thinking about replacing the xlver2 rom
with the xlver1? My understanding is that the XL-7 patterns and
songs won't play correctly on an Mp-7 or PX-7 with original xlver1
rom, which is the reason EMU released the xlver2 rom.
Just curious, Mike

BTw, what is the going price on the Xl-7, so I won't get ripped off??

>>>I think $499 is going rate for an XL-7 or MP-7, the PX-7's are more at
$699. Only because they are new, you can easily get a Protean Drum ROM for
cheap and put it in the XL-7 too. <<<

My intent is to play live, rather than focus on studio recording... Are
any of you using the xl-7 or mp-7 in live "gig" situations... if so, have
they crashed often(if at all)?

>>>I use mine live all the time, in fact that's it's main purpose for me,
as a live sequencer/sound module. The only time I've had major issues,
was when the power outlet I was plugged into at the venue had questionable
voltage. They were running their sound and lights all off the same
breaker, and I think it freaked out the XL-7. Best bet is to get small
$50 UPS and you'll be fine. <<<

I am focused on the dance, techno, trance genre; what would be good
expansion cards to get???

>>>Doesn't matter to be honest, as long as you make your own sounds you
can make any ROM sound good in those genres. If you only want to use
Factory Presets, then the TSCY, XL-ROM, Beat Garden, and POP rom all are
good choices. ,<<

Lastly, what other hardware are you using to complement the xl-7?

>>>Sometimes an ER-1, previously a Roland SP808, and soon to get a Kaoss
KP-2 effects unit too. Starting very shortly I'll be using a laptop
running Kontakt too. ,<<

I would like to use a novation remote 25...Is anyone out there using
this???

>>>It's a great little keyboard, I plan on getting one once the laptop
arrives. <<<

What other haredware would you reccommend???

>>>Depends on what you need it for. I can do entire live sets using JUST
the XL_7, so I don't think anything else is neccessary, only what you feel
you need. ,<<

Re: Questions from a newbie

2004-01-26 by dj 61

I had the ver 1 installed and was set on creating all my own
patterns etc. Then I decided I should start using what was at hand
and began checking out some factory arps which led me on the
slippery slope to occasionally hi jacking a melody or so from
diferent patterns. This led me to download the xl-7 patterns which
to my dismay did not work. Ah, ver1 vs ver2. I had some ver2s in and
decided to test one out. Patterns work. However previous works with
the xl-v1 now have big gaps in them, it turns out I used that rom
more than I thought! So now the debate is to take my old patterns
and put in new presets or while having the xl2 for comparison change
xl-7 patterns to xl1 presets. Besides I'm kind of attached to that
ole piece of silicone, ya know? I'm just really unsure how important
the XL7 patterns are to me. Besides I've swapped roms around alot
lately and I feel as if I am butchering my works everytime:(
Quick question, slow answer!

Re: Questions from a newbie

It is quite nice and silver too! I llike the stock soundset. I
bought it used and maxxed just after the MP-7. The idea at the time
was to use it to crossfade betwen patterns, but now x-mix has taken
care of that. I had problems with the sequencer on it for a while
and being used there was really no recourse in the situation and it
was used as primarily as a soundmodule. Since updating to 2.0 it has
run flawlessly and I am currently working on a composition using the
2500 as the primary sequencer. I am currently not attempting to
sequence on all 32 channels so I am not using my setup anywhere near
its capacity, but I am working on it:) I noticed on musicians friend
it is ~$200 more than the px-7. I don't understand this unless you
are rackmounting and space is of a premium. Paying more for no keys
seems unusual although the 2500 does have a knob hold in p[lace of
the touch strip hold, I believe.
 Tom
