The continuation of Grrr!

The continuation of Grrr!

2004-01-09 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

Ok, so I went home last night and sat down to try and figure out this
weird problem I'm having using some of the advice on the list. First
thing I did was sit down and back up everything in my XL-7 (err, really
just the Multi's as I back everything else up daily anyway), and then
reloaded the OS. This went fine and once it was done, the XL-7 appeared
to be running better. No more menu delays, and my Presets seem to be ok
too. The data wheel was still a bit strange, but I think that might just
be the data wheel getting on in years (what was the name of the spray you
guys used to clean it with? I'm too lazy to look it up).

Then, just to be safe, I decided to check the diagnostics too. Entered
diagnostic mode (power on while holding both Cursor buttons, in case you
forgot) and ran all the tests, everything checked out ok. I go to Screen
18 to reboot the XL-7, and it turns off and then..... stays off. Hmm,
power cycle, it still nothing, dead as a door nail. I pull the power
cord, wait 15 minutes, try again, and still nothing. Tried again a
couple of hours later, and it still won't power up.

Big thanks to Aaron, the Emu expert, for his sage-like advice. :) Hehe,
just kidding with you man.

Anyway, I get up early this morning and try it again, and lo and behold it
turns on! Ok, so now it seems to be working, but I'm not too comfortable
with it's stability at this point. Kind of worrisome that took all night
before it would even turn on again, and I have no explaination what could
be causing it. Long story short, everything appears to be fine now, but
for how long is the question that worries me. Hopefully I'll know more by
Monday.

Thanks again to everyone for their advice, except Aaron (hehe, that was a
joke too).

"what was the name of the spray you guys used to clean it with?"

Over the years I´ve heard of all sorts of wonder potions but i don´t
have any confidence in them. The liquids may solve the problem short
term but they love to attract dust which dries up and the problem
usually comes back to haunt you later.
I would try using compressed air first before/if at all - any liquid
gack.

Did you try reseating the SIMMS, double checking the internal
connections, and trying a different powercord?

Sorry if this has already been suggested, but better to be
redundant than totally quiet.

Is your XL-7 plugged into a decent surge supressor, or straight
into the wall? I've found that this can really make quite a huge
difference - surpressors condition the power considerably better
than a bare wall outlet by keeping the voltage constant and level.
Those little spikes and dips that come from a wall outlet can damage
electronics of any sort over time. As for the powered-off-and-not-
back-on-until-morning issue, this could be caused by an electric
spike - my computer did something similar a few years ago when a
small surge hit my apartment. It only affected the single computer
plugged straight into a wall outlet, and it took most of the night
to dissipate the extra charge that had forced its way into the power
supply.

  Just some thoughts!

I was about to suggest the same thing, but actually to go buy a $50
(or larger) UPS device. Not only will the UPS provide the same
clamping and resistance to brownouts, but it will handle blackout and
power fluctuation conditions as well.

My advice:
When it comes to power in your studio, even a home studio, you must
be careful on your electrical wiring and expectations. I usually run
everything that connects through some additional cable (audio, midi,
whatever) from the same root UPS, being careful not to over burden
this device. This gives me the best scenario for keeping electrical
problems at bay.

It sucks to wake up one morning and have unexplainable problems, or
worse, completely lose all the data or hardware you had. I know from
personal experience in a local studio.

I also condition my phone line/cable line if it connects to my music
PC system.

For some good details on an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) vist:
http://www.howstuffworks.com/question28.htm

Oh, and take one when you play live too. Let someone trip over that
cable, not your "real" cable.

Just my .02

"what was the name of the spray you guys used to clean it with?"

Deoxit D5 made by Caig Laboratories Inc.

Also, on the power issue, in addition to a UPS, a line conditioner made by Furman is always a
good idea. You can get one of their cheaper ones which will only iron out the line spikes and
clean up your sound, or you can spend $450 on their Power Conditioner, the AR 1215 or the
discontinued AR 117. The latter are usually found on eBay for around $250. The Power Conditioner
will even out the power if it's too high or too low. An essential tool if you live in a place
with uneven electricity or if you EVER gig out. (Unless you don't mind replacing your gear every
once in a while...)

How old is your XL7? What year did you buy it? Just to get an idea of how
old the circuitry is, what hardware revision it may be that sort of thing.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, my XL-7 is plugged into a decent surge
suppresor as well as a UPS. After a failed gig I had due to the XL-7 not
liking the crappy power supply I was getting from a club (club's fault,
not the XL-7's), I have been good about making sure that the power going
to my XL-7 is as clean as possible.
