Live Performance Features?

Live Performance Features?

2002-01-07 by glennvassallo

I have a Virus B synthesiser and an Akai S2000 Sampler. I want to be
able to do the following by using the XL-7, and was wondering what is
possible. My questions are coming from a live performance
perspective, where I use an XL-7 as the master controller to sequence
my synth and sampler.

Questions:

1) Is it possible to use some of the Track Enable/Mute buttons to
send a looped sequence of midi notes out the XL-7 MIDI Out A and/or B
to the synth or sampler?

2) Is it possible to use the Keypads to trigger the synth or sampler
like you would with a MIDI keyboard. (Mainly to play Samples on the
fly)

3) Is it it possible to use the trigger functionality to trigger a
sequence of notes (instead of one note) to send out the XL-7 MIDI Out
A and B.

4) Is it possible to change a Track for a Pattern in real-time
without having to stop the performance. i.e. Change a loop for a
track while continuing to play live. Or at the very least change the
entire Pattern so that long live sessions are possible.

HI!

I am still researching the XL7 and the RS7000 myself.
But I do believe that you can do 1, 2 and 4 of what
you ask. I am not familiar with application 3, but it
sounds useful!

Have you considered the yamaha RS7000 at all? I wanted
to know if you have an opinion.

Cheers!

hmmm why not? think yes.... I use also a Virus b in my livesets and you can
send arps to midi a or b.... which are played from da virus... all over all
I programm patterns which are looped... isnt it the same?

I use an EMU esi-32 and it works..... youve only one octave.... but also
the transpose buttons....

think is that what emu calls ARPs..... pretty nice feature.... but thats
question one?????

well.... while one pattern is playin you can search for da next one... the
old one playes to da end and than it switch to the new one....
all over all the xl-7 is the best live machine I have ever played... ( also
own before the Yamaha RM1x and the Rolan MC-80)... maybe the rs7000 is also
good, but I dont like yamha with thousands of little menues.... .... and
also you say u use an akai sampler... so why the rs7000? also good are the
16 programmable knobs... real great while youre live actin....

Re: Live Performance Features?

2002-01-07 by glennvassallo

Thanks for the answers, I have explained questions 1 and 3 in more
detail below.

The difference between my Question 1 and 3 is that I am referring to
the modes that the XL-7 has. As far as I am aware you can set the
buttons to use "Track Enable/Mute" or "Triggers".

Q1. I want to be able to send a sequence (loop) out the MIDI Outs to
my synth and/or sampler instead of to the XL-7 internal sounds. For
example button 1-4 enable/mute the loops for the XL-7 internal drum
set. Then button 5-8 are configured to enable/mute loops that are
sent to my Virus b via the XL-7 MIDI Out A, then buttons 9-12 to my
sampler via MIDI Out B.

Q3. When the buttons are in "Triggers" mode I know it is possible to
send one note to an external device such as my sampler, but is it
possible to send a sequence of notes (a loop) that I have programmed
(i.e. not just an arppegiator of one note)

Thanks,
Glenn

No I have not. My reason is that I currently have a EMU XL-1 and love
it. I would never get rid of it if I was not going to get the XL-7.
But since I am strongly leaning that way I will be trading my XL-1
during my XL-7 purchase. The other point is that I have a sampler,
Akai S2000 so do not require those features as much.

Glenn.

Re: [xl7] Live Performance Features?

1) Is it possible to use some of the Track Enable/Mute buttons to send a
looped sequence of midi notes out the XL-7 MIDI Out A and/or B to the
synth or sampler?

>>>Yes, you can specify whether a track goes to teh internal XL-7 sounds,
or to either MIDI out A or B. It can also go to BOTH the internal sounds
and external synths if you want. <<<

2) Is it possible to use the Keypads to trigger the synth or sampler like
you would with a MIDI keyboard.

>>> Yes, I use it to control soft synths all the time. <<<

3) Is it it possible to use the trigger functionality to trigger a
sequence of notes (instead of one note) to send out the XL-7 MIDI Out A
and B.

>>>What you want is similiar to Roland's "RPS" or Korg's "RPPR" features.
Unfortunately I don't think it's possible with trigger buttons. You could
program it as a regular track sent to a MIDI port though, and just use the
track mute buttons to do the same thing. Albeit at a loss of a regular
track though. <<<

4) Is it possible to change a Track for a Pattern in real-time without
having to stop the performance. i.e. Change a loop for a track while
continuing to play live. Or at the very least change the entire Pattern so
that long live sessions are possible.

>>>Most definitely, and that's the way nmost of us do live work I would
wager. You can switch patterns on the fly quite easily, as well as switch
between tracks for tweaking. <<<<

Correct.

Yes. Each track has the assignability to be internal, external, or both.
Each track also has the ability to hold up to 16 channels of data. You could
set up your rig as follows:

track 1-4: controlling *internal* synth channels 1-32 (01-16A, 01-16B)
track 5-8: controlling *external* MIDI A channels for your Virus (ext 01-16A)

track 9-12: controlling *external* MIDI B channels for your sampler (ext
01-16B)
track 13-16: whatever you want, maybe even some "both" tracks controlling
XL-7 *and* Virus

The way to do this (at least as I see it) is to create your own arp patterns
(they are quite flexible) and put them on some unused internal channels (like
14B or something) and turn the volume down for that track. Turn arp transmit
on and then that arp pattern will play external gear. Note that
"arpeggiator" is probably an insufficient word for what arp patterns really
are. The are much like RPPR or RPS features when in pattern mode (as opposed
to up/down type modes).
