Cut/Paste Problem

Cut/Paste Problem

2004-01-09 by xkrider1

Hello. After suffering through some "what's happening with Emu"
paranoia and a first PX-7 showing up with massive shipping damage,
I've finally gotten one that works. Not to belabor a point that you
all know already, but this is one of the most amazing pieces of
metal, plastic, chips, resistors, knobs, wires and embedded genius
(and a healthy dose of musical voodoo, to boot) I have ever seen in
my life (been on the planet for a while now)! The more I work with
it, the more saddened I am that this may be the end of the road for
the xx-7s. What a tragedy that the commercial marketplace appears to
have claimed, for what ever reason, another superior piece of
equipment. I guess, on the other hand, I am fortunate enough to have
gotten one, and to be able to play with it. Absolutely phenomenal.
Now, it's a matter of keeping it alive and learning to use it.
Which brings me to my first appeal for some help.
I'm pretty much a MIDI/sequencing/synthesis illiterate, so I've been
struggling with Tracks, Channels, Events, Note-On, etc., etc., but it
is SLOWLY starting to make some sense (I think?!?). As opposed to
the complex things (loops, arps, sysex) most of you appear to work
with, I am wanting to write "linear" rhythm tracks to use with
recorded song tracks. My intention is using the PX-7 as the stand-
alone source of all the traditional percussion/rhythm stuff - which
it looks like it will do in spades!

1) My current problem is that I can't get the Cut/Paste function to
work. I am following the instructions in the manual (which,
interestingly came with pp. 133-148 missing!) for both the Pattern
and Song Modes, but I can never get the Song to play past the
original STOP command. I've tried additionally doing a Song/Pattern
SAVE (not mentioned in the manual, but the light continues to flash
after pressing ENTER) but that doesn't change anything. For
learning, I just put 2 different patterns together as a "song" and
first tried pasting the song to itself, just to double it. Then, I
tried to repeat just the last pattern, to slightly extend the song,
which is pretty much what the illustration in the manual appears to
do. I've also tried to paste in the middle of the first pattern, and
made sure to RTZ, but it will never play past the orignal two
patterns and the STOP. I tried to lengthen the SONG to make space
for the paste (nothing in the manual about this; just a guess) but
that didn't work either- if I did it right. I have seen what looks
like "PASTING DONE" blow by quickly on a screen, but it never stays
visible. I'm stumped.

2) On pattern edits I've saved, after SAVE TO / ENTER and
OVERWRITE / ENTER, the SAVE / COPY button is still flashing, so I
press it, get the SAVE to PATTERN screen again, and without selecting
a destination, press the S/C button again, and the screen goes away.
This seems to work OK but the manual, again, doesn't read like this.
Is this normal?

3) I saw mention of a Tutorials and Tips file that was available on
the Emu website, but I can't find it. Does anyone know anything
about the whereabouts of this?

Thanks for listening...and for any advice,

Ken

I don't know how much help I will be, but since I am still up I will
try my hand at these.
1) Go to song mode and then go to step record and make sure the stop
does not come after the second step if so remove the stop and
resave. I have done cut and paste with patterns, but not songs. I
use the step record to be able to alter track mutes and pattern
length from step to step as required and have never thought of using
cut and paste. Maybe I'll try sometime.
2)After saving you have to hit the s/c or pattern button again to
return to the pattern screen. (for songs use the song button instead
of pattern)Otherwise, you are still in the save menu and it is armed
to save.
3)I do not know what to tell you about E-mus tuto and tips, but
there is a helpful faq and a tips file downloadable in the files
section located on the right side of the group page.

Cut/Paste Problem, Round 2

2004-01-09 by xkrider1

Well, after some more experimentation, in addition to my other
Cut/Paste failures, I can't get the Combine Multiple Tracks into
Single Multitrack function (p.91, PX-7 manual)to work either - this
appearing to be a variation on the Cut/Paste theme. When I try
this, everything appears to be working as it should (as usual),
complete with the destination track LED lit, but PLAY reveals no
sound on that track, just like no apparent paste in my other
attempts. (I have set the destination track to MultiA.) The ONLY
thing I've gotten to work is one Cut/Paste attempt where I pasted one
measure from one pattern into a completely different pattern. I'm
not sure whether to draw a conclusion yet that the problem is
connected
with cutting and pasting within the same Song/Pattern, or not --- or
what that would mean if it were the case. So, I'm MORE stumped ---
and I do think I'm following the instructions. I've tried this with
RECORD on and off, but I didn't think it was necessary to have RECORD
on for everything you SAVE.

I tried deleting the STOP from the Song, but that didn't work, so
I've pretty much given up on the Song Mode for the time being and
just started trying to get this to work with a Pattern. Thanks,
though, "61" for the thought; seems like a reasonable possibility.

When I'm trying to cut and paste I'm not doing anything to the
Presets; I think this may be what dj61 said about just clearing the
screen back to the Pattern/Song selection screen. As I said, it
seems to work OK like that; I just wasn't sure that's how it was
supposed to be. Plus I misstated that; actually the button isn't
flashing, it's just ON, until it returns to the P/S screen, and is
then OFF. So that seems alright.

v. 2.0

3)I had already checked out the FAQs and Tips before I posted.
Thanks, though, for putting those up. Above and beyond the call of
duty, and a great resource for everyone here. Once I can get the
Cut/Paste thing figured out (?), I'll be back there, diggin' around.
Everytime I look through there something else makes a little more
sense.

Still hoping someone may know what's happening with the Cut/Paste
thang.

"Is it love...or just confusion?"

Did you try to "Apply Clipboard Settings" after you did the paste? If you
just cut and paste the MIDI data to a new track, the XX-7 doesn't
automatically copy the Preset from the source track, you have to do that
manually.

Re: Cut/Paste Problem, Round 2

Yeah, I'd tried that, but in the process of stumbling around with
this, I realized what the problem was with the "Combine Tracks"
function. The PX-7 manual says, on p. 90, "This function takes all
selected tracks (selected by pressing the flashing mute keys [in
italics in the text]), combines them...". Being really unfamiliar
with most of the concepts that the xx-7s are based on, AND TRUSTING
THE MANUAL, I was following instructions and pressing the flashing
mute keys. Of course, this was actually DE-selecting the tracks, so,
since I was intending to select all of the tracks, I was actually
selecting NONE of them. Voila, an activated multi-channel
track "pasted" with no data. (I humbly accept the "green ass" award,
for the moment.) Now, looking back at the Song Cut and Paste
instructions, I think those may not make any sense either, and it
looks like they were created by some sloppy and/or erroneous - dare I
say it - cutting and pasting.
Anyway, thanks for thinking about my problem.
