Some of both. Mostly drum patterns and arps. I've only had the unit
several months. I'm learning...thanks for all the help that's found in

Re: So what's everyone using their XX-7's for anyway?

2004-01-08 by phest2k

I have an mp7 - I just love the paint job!
(joke)
sorry about that - Emu´s style dept must have realised this too late
and just HAD to bring out the px7. Or does Waldorf have patents on
purple and yellow.
Seriously now:
The sequencer does it for me. It´s got to be one of the most ergonomic
electronic instruments in the business. With the legendary Emu sounds
thrown in.....Great machine .
I haven´t gigged-out with it yet but the ease of playing/recording
"live" means that I don´t have to be using cubase all the time, thus
not gazing at a screen for hours on end. I could understand why making
music had to be such a strain on the EYES.

Re: [xl7] So what's everyone using their XX-7's for anyway?

2004-01-09 by lynn

mine is racked up, synced to cubase and i use it mainly as a sound module.
i use alot of the arps and preset patterns, but change the preset sounds.
usually i send it to a distortion effect on send one and i use an old school
boss digital pitchshifter/delay for send two. all of it goes through a dbx
compressor and into the layla. i hate midi so i record my tracks into
cubase as i go...different variations of each loop, usally like four
measures. i chop them up later and do whatever sounds good. my only other
gear is waldorf micro q. minimal and simple, but effective.

Re: So what's everyone using their XX-7's for anyway?

2004-01-09 by S V G

Being primarily a keyboard performer, I bought it because I was fed up with having to edit
and tweak sounds on the Proteus 2000. I mainly use it as a sound module (X-ROM, World, Pop, ZR)
to mix with the sounds of my Kurzweil keyboard. Secondarily, I use it as a sequencer to input
parts that I'm arranging for other instruments. Thirdly, as a drum machine to practice guitar
with.

I currently use my MP-7 for live sequencing (to add percussion and EFX with
our live drummer) and for a sound module in my home studio.

Re: So what's everyone using their XX-7's for anyway?

2004-01-09 by sincultura13

-I use it as knob midi box with ableton live.

-To record midi real time ideas to be edited on the computer as
audio or midi... I'm still organically growing to use a bit more its
sequencer, but it might be a while before I'll sequence a whole song
on it.

-Last, but not least important I use it as a drum module and
synth... I'm finally getting to the point where I can bang drum
parts on the pads. The problem I have is that I end up with many of
the hits on the same track and it's kind of wierd to have to process
them together someitmes... For example I'll use a 4 band dynamic
compressor if I want a clean sound, but If I'm doing a dub-like
track is less flexible to apply delays, reverb on the Kick and
Snares at the same time.... Any advice on how to work around this?

BTW, GOOD THREAD!

For what it's worth, I totally agree. Once you know your way around it,
the XL-7's sequencer is so easy and fast to use. I can program on it
quickl;y, like it's second nature.

Making music :) Seriously though...

Mostly I use it to make up Patterns (ie, songs for me) that I can play out
live. Mostly it's the heart of my live set, or as is the case now, it's
ALL I use live. I also find the XX-7 great for adding percussion parts to
my studio tracks (those made in SX), grab a congo preset, add an Arp to
it, and you get an instant funky percussion line. I also have been using
the Protean Drum Samples a lot for my next CD that I'm working on, the
source samples are fabulous.

I will also use the XL-7 as a controller for tweaking softsynths and
Reason, as well as during my DJ sets to add whatever I feel the set needs.

rEalm, what do you use yours for?

I'm using my new PX-7 primarily as a sound module--an upgrade from my
Proteus 2000. I just like the idea of having the same synth with all
the knobs and control goodies that don't fit on the face of a 1U rack
module.

BTW: I wanted to rack-mount mine, but that wouldn't have been
ergonomic in my setup, so I put it on a retractable rack shelf BUT
the platic endcheeks were too wide to retract the shelf...so I
removed the endcheeks and made my own custom set of nice thin oak
endcheeks. It instantly made the unit look like something from the
1970's (in a good way!) Fun!

Mostly as a sound module. Recording using Cubase on a PC. I think
EMU has some of the best sounds out there these days, especially for
the $$$. (Sure, I got $1200 for a Triton Le)
I have done some sequencing on it. It is very easy to use,
especially when I don't feel like booting up the PC.
I use it live for mixing in my DJ setup. Love that tap tempo.

Yes, though once I get my computer set up again I'll probably be using
it for editing operations that benefit from a GUI, and bouncing stuff
back and forth.

> - Sound Module?

Yes, mostly drums, arps, and some pads. The Protean Drums ROM is on my
shopping list. Virus and guitar cover the rest.

> - Controller?

Sorta. The knobs are fine for volume and pan, but I don't find them
super useful for editing since they don't send sysex or aftertouch (or
even all the CC's) and thus can't be assigned to all of the Virus
parameters. My PC-1600 is more flexible in that respect. The pads are
nice; at some point I'll probably get an Oxygen or something too (hard
to play chords on the pads).

> - Live Sequencer

Yep. Main reason I got it.

> - Portable writing?

Yep. I like curling up in bed with my XL and a pair of headphones.

> - etc?

I find it easier to build drum patterns with hardware. For basslines I
do wish it was easier to transpose sections of a pattern...sometimes
I'll use an arp to sketch out how I want the bassline to go. On the
whole though I agree with the ergonomics comment - it's a breeze to
slap together a drum/bass/synth pattern using the XL.
