'pop' noise on px-7.....

'pop' noise on px-7.....

2004-01-07 by isomakcb

sorry, repost with better subject

I'm getting 'pop' noises prior to the effects on my brand new px-7...it happens when
playing a kick and a synth sound at the same time...

it's appearing to happen only to certain drum kits, here's some of the ones it's
happened to me on:

Filt 2d rim
Squeezvortex
Lectrophonic
Danger
Jabberwocky
OddSkool*IDM
AM-LoFi
Broken 8-bit
SuperSquishy

I'm sure there's more, but i'm tired right now and want to go to sleep...

and i thought you were only supposed to get a "pop" noise out of the Proteus
2500!

(sorry, couldn't resist)

i get digital clipping sometimes with multiple parts on my XL-7 - but
usually if the volume is really high for each part - when you go to part mix
on the knobs and reduce volume on the synth and/or drums, does the pop sound
go away?

no, it's always there no matter what i set the levels to :-\

i turned the drums all the way down and i still hear it, the volume of
the pop changes with the volume of the drum track...so it's all in
those drum kits.

Re: 'pop' noise on px-7..... On my drum rom as well

I had not noticed this whaen creating songs with my drum rom, but
last night I was palying around in pattern with xmix marvelling at
the wonders of a smoothly flowing continuous mix or rather the
possibility of one and behold the popping sounds. In the original
pattern the track plays fine but when xmixed here it popped and
popped alot. I muted all other tracks, and still popping. How did I
make this stop? hit the stop button. It appears this must be a
gliche in the rom, uh,oh! I dug up this post looking for answers. I
would hope realm would know something being one of the first users
of this, but it appears his whole machine has popped. Someone please
help or you could be next!

I'm exchanging mine for another one from musiciansfriend..hoping its a
defect in the rom/unit itself. i'll let you know when i get the
replacement if it's still there... (about a week and a half,
unfortunately)

It only happens during XMIX? Are the effects different from one Pattern

This must be a problem with the rom.
Are you sure you hands weren't charged with static when installing.
I ordered the Xtreme Lead ,Vintage pro and Protean Drum roms from
Emu via phone here in Australia (arrived within 5 days I might
add) ;).
The Drum rom on my Mp-7 works 100% ,no pops or any strange
idosyncratic problems what so ever.
So it definately is not the ROM samples themselves but something
else causing troubles.

Re: 'pop' noise on px-7..... On my drum rom as well

I thought the same and figured it was an isolated instance when the
post was made. I have Created several patterns and then created
songs and replaced some of the drums in older patterns. I have been
using it for over a month no problem. But then it hits pop after
pop. This was on the broken 8-bit (I don't think it should be that
broken!) in x-mix. I believe this is one of the ones listed in the
original post. I know it is not the samples because they have been
used must be a certain set of conditions maybe a combination with
certain effects settings. I would imagine this would case a little
caos live, although I guess you could just glare at the soundman
(person).
(Just kidding sound guys/gals):p

Re: 'pop' noise on px-7..... On my drum rom as well

I have noticed some similar loud popping sounds on my xl-1 with beat
garden when:

Syncing to MIDI clock then changing presets while auditiong. The pops
are very loud and seem to be related to the effects. I checked and my
system was setup to use the effects settings on channel 1, so when
chnainging these presets, I was changing global effect types as well.

Maybe setting the master option to a global efect setting (not using
a particular midi channel as the source of effect settings) is the
fix?

This is the only time I have incurred it. I was thinking fx as well
and put that in the previous post. I knew I should've read your post
before replying! I was using fx set to prset chan. 10 and have no
recollection of the preset used there. Maybe isomakcb can fill us in
on what fx settings he was using.

Re: 'pop' noise on px-7..... On my drum rom as well

Possibly. Is it true that each pattern carries setup info with it,
so that when I save a pattern all fx settings are saved with it and
will be implemented upon selecting the pattern again? I think I read
a post that said something like this before... I've just been using
the preset to carry fx info.

Re: 'pop' noise on px-7..... On my drum rom as well

I reset my px-7 to factory settings, erased all sequence data, and
was able to recreate the pops using one of the kits i orignally
listed along with 2 other patches. i dont even know how to use xmix
myself yet, i just programmed a beat and POP POP POP POP POP

As I said it was brand spankin new, I didn't open it up, so I never
touched the ROM itself. I REALLY hope this doesn't return with the
new unit....

What fx settings were you using? I am not familiar with the factory

If you could email me some patterns, I could take a look at it. My
guess is, though, that you're clipping the filters.

Nevermind. I just checked and found the problem. The MS20 instrument
in conjunction with the EarlyRizer filter at high Q causes pops. Try
038'3 kit:Lectrophonic and play the closed hi-hat (F#1) a bunch of
times and you'll hear it. Change the filter on layer 2 and it goes
away. Work around would be to lower Q on the offending presets. This
is the downside of having very resonant, very sharp 12th order
filters...  =)

i have no idea, i havnt played with it much because i think it's busted.

as far as email the other guy patterns...cant do it....all my computers
only have os x on them right now, and by the time i get 9 on one, it'll
be gone.

the earlyrizer filter appears to be the culprit though...what kind of
crap is this?

oh well, i dont really ever use more than one instrument at a time on
any of my synths anyway i always record out and apply more effects
and/or time correct anyway. i'm just a little upset, but at east my
px-7 isnt busted :) it just sucks that i found a limitation of the
machine the DAY i got it, within hours even.

thanks everyone :)

i dont think i'll really miss one filter that much anyway.

The machine is not broken, the filter is not broken, the samples are
fine. The only thing that could be considered "wrong" would be preset
design, in that they chose to turn up Q a little too high for that
preset. But who's to say that the preset designer didn't *want* a
click?

That's a red herring. I get the problem without any other tracks.

It could be considered a feature depending on your point of view.
Being able to create that much energy with a resonant filter is a good
thing in many situations.

> i dont think i'll really miss one filter that much anyway.

That filter is great, you don't have to discontinue it's use. It
however is *very* peaky as you've noticed. Simply turn down Q till you
get the desired effect. The MS20 samples apparrently have some energy
exactly where that filter has a lot of resonance, hence the pop.

Ahh, THat explains other pops and clicks I have gotten when working
on really wild presets on th phatt using early rise, however they
went away when reducing the number of presets playing at once. Now I
can go back adjust resonance and add my drums back in. It is also
nice to know that about the drum presets, could this still be
resultant with certain effects combos as I did not always get the
click. No keyboard access, huh? Guess I'll survive;)
Also I'll take this moment to give you your proper respects for
your work on an extraordinary machine that never ceases to amaze me.
I also appreciate how closely you have worked with this list.
Although I am relatively new, I have seen you posts throughout the
archives and noticed how the suggestions of the group have greatly
influenced the functions of machine I have today. I assume that you
are in a large part responsible for this.
May you be blessed with every knob tweak, track mute, and key press,

Hi all
I´ve been away for a few days and WOW, so many messages here. The
groups getting more like a chat room.Excellent stuff.

As for the "pop-noise" issue:
I think its a case of the tail wagging the dog here (horse pushing the
cart - whatever cliché you want). You need to step back a few paces and
think about what your trying to do. i.e -putting tons of filter and Q
on really HEAVY bass sounds. It´s a kind of oxymoronic exercise anyway
(IMO).This can only work with some filters and not with others. If
you´re a bass-head (aren´t we all) try turning the Q DOWN and turning
UP the bass on your mixer or amplifier - this gives you a bit more
headroom and helps avoiding "digital distortion" (sometimes;)!

Give me the best mixer/headphones/speekers on the market straight out
of their box and I´ll guarentee I could get a distorted output - but
this doesn´t mean thay they´re broken.
As Aaron pointed out, there´s definatly a creative opportunity here.
Exploit it!

Paul

I don't know if it relates to the pop, but I do recall seeing sysex
data stored with patterns. I will look using E-Loader utilities.

Re: [xl7] Re: 'pop' noise on px-7..... On my drum rom as well

Ok, i was using unedited preset sounds here, not turning any knobs.
Right out of the box a machine should NOT do that if i put a bass drum
with 16th notes over it. i didn't even know about those filters till
yesterday!!!

so i wasnt doing anything extreme here,

ok do this, go to an empty sequence, put C1 of "Lectrophonic" (038^3)
on 16th notes 1,11, and 12 with velocity of 84. put D1 of
"Lectrophonic" on 16th notes 5,8, and 13. now go to track/channel 2
and put C3 of "WayFayer" (113^1) on every 16th note for the bar, also
velocity of 84. And i still get the popping if i set the velocity of
C1 and D1 of "Lectrophonic" to 5!!!

Lots of popping, Never touched filter settings, just using presets.

Setting the Q to 0 doesn't get rid of the popping either. And the
popping isn't consistent. It always happens on a drum hit, but
sometimes it skips a few. But it always goes away upon removal/change
of that filter (to a different one)...

So I wasn't trying to do anything crazy. I layered 2 presets and boom.
(more like pop) there it was. I'm just saying they could have done
better testing. I wish i could just stick a limiter in that thing.

I'll bring the drum machine to work today and get the pattern off it.

Slow Wah Wah Guitar Effect

2004-01-13 by Cornell

I have a proteus rom installed in my mp. It's got wah wah guitar effects. Someone mentioned using filters to get that slow wah effect that I am looking for. Can anyone explain how to go about it? I'm clueless in Dallas. Thanks.

Data stored with patterns

I just checked data stored with patterns that confirms FX sysex
transmission when switching patterns.

METHOD 1:
1. Start MIDI Monitor (E-Loader1.1)
2. Enable display of all data
3. In Pattern View Mode, transport stopped, scroll to next pattern.
RESULTS-RUN 1 (using P2500 demo pattern):
1. Initial ctrl values for 7, 10, 79
2. 72-byte sysex data starting F0 18 0F 55 01 20 01 04 . . . . F7
RESULTS FROM OTHER TEST RUNS
(including switch to empty patterns and switch to/within song mode)
--ptchbend sent
--order: ch 0 --> ch 15 settings (respectively), then sysex data
--on occasion: modesel ch 0: mode:AllNotesOff (123) val: 0 sent
----with ctrllr ch 0: ctrl: 64 val: 0

F0 18 0F 55 01 = sysex that says edit the following parameters
20 = number of byte pairs to follow (32 pairs, 64 bytes)
01 04 = parameter ID (address of where data will go)
. . . . = data for 01 04, followed by 02 04 + data --> 10 04 + data
F7 = end of sysex command

PARAMETER IDs (LSB MSB)
01 04 to 10 04 = Master Effects Parameters
(see p. 49 sysex manual version 2.2)

This seems to confirm that switching patterns transmits Master
Effects Parameter values after sending controller data.

I encourage others to use the MIDI Monitor to examine midi data flow.

Hope this helps.
--Dr. Steve
--Resident Sysex Guru, semi-retired

PS: RTZ (pressing stop 2x) transmits controller data only--NOT
Master Effects Parameters!!

BTW: Think of the sequencer and synth engine as two separate things
here. What MIDI Monitor shows as being sent via midi is being sent
by the transport to the internal synth engine.

Might changing Sample Start or Loop values provide another workaround
and let the user retain the filter? Just a thought.

Re: [xl7] Slow Wah Wah Guitar Effect

Basically, you want to use the "EQ+ and Bandpass type" filters to emulate
the sound of the wah pedal. I don't know what filter to recommend
(haven't tried this yet), but play around with them and you should find
one that will be close to what you want. Adjust the Resonance to suit,
and you can tweak the knob just liek you were stepping on a pedal. If you
set up the Filter envelopes, you can approximate an "auto wah" too.

Try these filters:
- Contraband
- Swept1>1Oct
- Earbender

I seem to recall posting a series of steps to do something like
this. Someone wanted to take the oscilating sweep and apply it to
other presets.

If I am recalling this correctly and if it is what you want, search
the archives for my name. I will look myself and will post the link
if I find it before you do.

BTW, what preset (###^#: xxx.xxxxxxx) from the proteus rom are you
trying to use for the pattern?

Basic idea: use lfo to control filter parameter(s).

Hope this helps.

rEalm's the master programmer around here. I suggest:
(1) start with the wah-wah preset you want
(2) follow the set of steps at message 11104
(3) using the parameters rEalm recommends
(4) post a set of rom, patchcord, filter settings for others to try

if you got this click issue just if you use sequences upped by eloader try
to reajust the pattern size using the expand to x bars comand from the

.........another thought
