My first post here... E-mu ROM vs Alesis Q-Card

2004-01-03 by isomakcb

Hey everyone, I just ordered myself a px-7, wooohooo! I plan on adding the x-lead
v2 rom and pure phatt rom's to it, I'm so exited...I just have one question for anyone
who also has an Alesis qs-6.x/7.x/8.x/r here....

I currently have the latin expansion card for my qs-r, and I want to add another card
to the qs-r...since I'm going to get the pure phatt rom, I'm not going to get the hip
hop qcard...I'm not interested in piano sounds at the moment, so that gets rid of the
piano qcards...and since i'm getting the x-lead v2 rom, I'm not going to bother with
the eurodance qcard...which brings me to my question...

Does anybody have any opinions on the vintage synths qcard vs the vintage rom? It's
either vintage synths qcard vs the sanctuary qcard for me.

...And if you're wondering, the other stuff I have is (are?): Reason 2.5, ReCycle 2 (not
that that makes much of a difference in this case), Logic Platinum (I've played with the
demo of the es-1, not sure if I'm going to purchase that or not, I might get the es-2,
or the synth collection somewhere down the line, but I only have a G4 400, so untill I
upgrade that I'm not going to bother)

And I'm also posting this question in a alesis synth group. Thank you for your help :)

when i had my QS (just sold it actually) i had the vintage synths card -
don't bother. it tries to fake around the QS's lack of filter resonance with
all sorts of sample layering tricks, and 90% of the card is "Alaska" type
sweeps - big reverberating pads that don't really sound like any vintage
synth i've ever heard. there is an excellent KPR-77 drum bank, but it's not
worth getting the rest of the card for.

sanctuary card has some good organs and choirs, but little else - it's
designed for church use and has lots of AMENs in various keys.

you're better off getting an SRAM card and loading it up with 8 banks of
patches - there are some really great patches in Alesis's Expando banks.

Thanks, I think I have an 8 meg pcmcia card around here somewhere, i could use that.
I also forgot to mention I have a CS1x, but that wasn't worth mentioning anyway,
haha.

If I may ask, what's wrong with the Eurodance card? In spite of
its name, there are TONS of really excellent sounds on there!

I never said there was something wrong with it!!
I was just thinking of the limitations of the qs-r and it might not be worth it for me to
buy it.

Re: E-mu ROM vs Alesis Q-Card

Hi isomakcb,

Just thought I'd chime in with my opinions on your situation. I
don't actually have a QS, but a friend does, and I'm familiar with
many of the sounds.

I just got a PX-7 a couple of weeks ago, and I'm quite pleased with
it. I've been a fan of E-mu gear for several years, and I've always
thought that drums were the weak spot, sonically speaking. No more.
E-mu have finally rectified this long-standing weakness. The PX-7
[Protean Drums] sounds are VERY good, and should be able to address
most styles quite well. To put it bluntly, it swiftly kicks ass. A
pleasant surprise: the cymbal decays are VERY LONG and NATURAL
sounding! Nice!

Now, as for the Vintage ROM:

The Vintage expansion may just be the overall BEST expansion ROM E-mu
ever made, in terms of out-of-the-box-usability, sonic diversity,
differentness (minimum of overlap with other soundsets). I recommend
it very highly. It is great, and largely underappreciated (read: not
overused)

Buy it now, while you still can. (Anyone know what's going on with E-
mu and the availability of their product line?)

Proteus 2000 with
- X-Lead
- Sounds of the ZR
- Orchestral Sessions II

PX-7 with
- Vintage Collection
- World Expedition

ROMs I have owned, but got rid of:
- Techno Synth Construction Yard
- Beat Garden
- Protozoa
(all too dated for my taste)
